Seven Lakes

Seven Lakes may not be open to visitors all year due to its high altitude. The most suitable period is the summer season, from early June to late September. During these months, the lakes are fully accessible, the surrounding vegetation is at its most vibrant, and hiking trails are passable. In early spring, snow remnants may block roads; in autumn, the weather can suddenly turn cold and fog is common. If photography is your priority, avoid midday; the light hits the lake surface much better in the early morning or late afternoon.

To reach Seven Lakes, you come from Kayseri city center to Yahyalı district. After Yahyalı, follow the Hacer Valley route to ascend to the plateau. The last 17 km of the road is winding and potholed; visitors report that they can cover this distance in 50 minutes to over 1 hour. Using a high-traction or high-ground clearance vehicle is important for both comfort and safety. Direct access by public transport is not available; renting a car or joining private tour organizations are the most practical options.

Once you arrive at the plateau, you can hike along the paths connecting the seven lakes. There are two different entry points, starting from either Büyükgöl (Big Lake) or Deringöl (Deep Lake); which one you choose depends on your parking spot and planned route. The hiking trail between the lakes is of moderate difficulty; it is advisable to proceed at a slow pace to catch your breath at high altitude. The waterfall points are of particular value for photography; visitors highlight these points as the most enjoyable part of the trip.

Lighting fires and using gas canisters are prohibited in the area; this rule is constantly reminded by loudspeaker announcements. Those planning to camp need to find alternative solutions for heating and cooking. GSM network may not be available in most of the area; plan ahead for emergency communication. Since the weather at high altitudes can show unpredictable variations, it is advisable to bring an extra layer of clothing. It is safer to leave the area before sunset as lighting is insufficient in the evening hours.

The most striking photo opportunities at Seven Lakes are the lake shores and around the waterfalls. The angle where the Aladağlar silhouette meets the lakes at the first ascent to the plateau is ideal for wide-angle shots. Dozens of different shades of green can be captured in the same frame; visitors particularly emphasize this richness of color. In cloudy weather, reflections on the lake surface can also create strong compositions. If you plan to use a tripod, consider that the ground is rocky and sloped.

There are no regular food and drink facilities on the Seven Lakes plateau. It is essential to bring enough water and food with you; this is a critical point especially for those planning long hikes. In Yahyalı town center, there are markets and restaurants where you can meet basic needs. Coming prepared before setting off from Kayseri will be the most appropriate approach.

Half a day to a full day is sufficient to comfortably explore Seven Lakes. For those who only want to see the lakes and waterfalls, a 3-4 hour visit may be enough. For those who want to complete the hiking trails and spend time on the plateau, planning a full day is more logical. Considering the travel time from Kayseri city center and back, it can be considered a day trip program.
