Standing in the heart of Kayseri, west of Cumhuriyet Square, Kurşunlu Mosque is one of the strongest representatives of classical Ottoman architecture in this city. The structure, whose original name is Hacı Ahmet Paşa Mosque, became known as Kurşunlu Mosque among the public due to its entire dome being covered with lead sheets; it was also registered under this name in official records. Although Mimar Sinan is known to have left 12 works in Kayseri, his birthplace, this is the only structure that has resisted the wear and tear of centuries.
Completed in 1585, the mosque presents a simple exterior with its single dome and single minaret; the scene changes upon stepping inside. The craftsmanship of the minbar, the pen decorations, and the interior ornaments reveal the delicacy of Ottoman art. The double-porticoed last congregation area adds a character to the mosque reminiscent of the Mihrimah Sultan, Atik Valide, and Rüstem Pasha mosques in Istanbul. The historical ablution fountain completing the courtyard has also survived and preserves the integrity of the mosque.
