Müze Gazhane

Müze Gazhane welcomes visitors throughout the year; however, the busiest periods for its program are the spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) months. During these seasons, outdoor concerts, film screenings, and art events become more frequent; the complex's spacious courtyards truly come alive.

Weekends, especially Saturday afternoons, are the busiest times. If you prefer a calmer experience, it would be wise to choose weekday mornings. For the Children's Science Center and museums, crowds significantly increase during school holidays; checking the event program in advance during these periods will make your visit easier.

Müze Gazhane is located in an easily accessible spot by public transport. Those wishing to come by Metro can use the Kadıköy-Tavşantepe line and get off at Acıbadem station; a short 5-minute walk from there will take you to the venue.

For those preferring Marmaray, the closest stop is Söğütlüçeşme; you can also reach it by walking for 5 minutes from here. Those using Metrobus can get off at Söğütlüçeşme Metrobus station and follow the same route. Various municipal buses departing from Kadıköy pier also pass through the Hasanpaşa route. Since parking options around the complex are limited for those coming by car, public transport is recommended.

The story of Hasanpaşa Gasworks dates back to 1892. Established to provide gaslight to Istanbul's Anatolian Side, the facility stood out as one of the important industrial structures of its era. The complex's design belongs to Architect Guglielmo Semprini, and its construction to Charles Georges. The structure retains its characteristic as one of the rare examples of 19th-century industrial architecture in Istanbul.

The facility operated under the Üsküdar-Kadıköy Gas Company, then various public institutions, and finally İETT. On June 13, 1993, with the arrival of natural gas in the region, the gasworks lost its function. After approximately 26 years of restoration and conservation work, it was brought back to life on July 9, 2021, under the name Müze Gazhane. This transformation is considered one of the most comprehensive examples in Turkey of preserving and repurposing historical industrial structures for public benefit.

Since the complex spans a large area, planning your visit will save time. After entering, we recommend first exploring the Climate Museum; this museum, which addresses climate change and environmental issues in an interactive language, offers a highly impressive experience for both adults and children.

Afterward, you can proceed to the Cartoon and Humor Museum. This venue, where you can see important figures and works from Turkish cartoon history, is particularly valuable for those interested in art history. The Children's Science Center is an indispensable stop for families; with its interactive design that gamifies science, it's an area that makes young visitors' eyes sparkle. After visiting all the museums, you can relax in the complex's historic courtyard and take a break at one of the cafes. Especially the open areas around the gasometers are where the industrial architecture is most strikingly felt.

Müze Gazhane is practically an open-air studio for photography enthusiasts who love industrial aesthetics. The most iconic photo spot of the complex is the historic gasometers, which stand out with their tall cylindrical structure. These structures, where brick and metal construction are used together, offer impressive shots, especially in the golden hour light (one hour before sunset).

The stone-paved ground of the main courtyard and the surrounding historic factory buildings create a perfect frame for wide-angle shots. Indoors, the high-ceilinged warehouse and machine halls are ideal for dramatic perspective photos. The colorful wall art at the entrance of the Cartoon Museum has also become a popular choice for social media shares.

Müze Gazhane hosts multiple cafes and food and beverage outlets. In these venues spread across the complex's outdoor areas, you can find a menu ranging from light snacks to hot meals. Sitting in the shadow of the historic buildings and drinking coffee becomes a special pleasure of the visit.

Kadıköy, located in the immediate vicinity of Müze Gazhane, is one of Istanbul's richest gastronomic regions. Moda Street, Mühürdar Street, and Kadıköy Bazaar offer options to suit every taste, from fish restaurants to vegan-friendly cafes, historic patisseries to street food. While entry to Müze Gazhane is free, separate tickets may be required for some museums and special events within the complex. We recommend checking the official website for the current event program and museum opening hours before your visit, as some areas may be temporarily closed due to special events.

The complex is closed on Mondays; if your Istanbul itinerary falls on this day, you will need to shift your visit to another day. On weekends, especially on concert and event days, the area can get very crowded. For families with children, age group restrictions may sometimes apply at the Science Center, so it's helpful to inquire in advance. The area is generally accessible for disabled visitors and strollers.
