Florya Atatürk Sea Mansion

Florya, a rather dull hunting village in the 19th century, gradually became one of Istanbul's popular coastal districts. When Atatürk's health condition necessitated a place by the sea for him to rest, the Istanbul Municipality took action and commissioned Seyfi Arkan, one of the prominent architects of the period, to prepare a project. Arkan, influenced by his education in Europe, presented a functionalist and simple design.

The mansion was completed in approximately forty-three days in June and July of 1935 and opened for use on August 14, 1935. The wooden pier extending over the sea and the structure on piles were a rather bold design for its time, both in terms of engineering and aesthetics. Atatürk used to swim, rest, and sometimes continue his work here. Today, the structure is managed by the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) and is open to visitors as a museum.

The most suitable period to visit the mansion is during the spring and autumn months. Between April-June and September-October, both the weather conditions are ideal for walking along the seaside, and you avoid the crowds of the summer months. In July and August, the Florya beach area becomes quite crowded, making it difficult to reach the mansion and move around comfortably.

Weekday mornings, especially right after opening, are the calmest times to visit. On weekends and during school holidays, the density of student groups may increase. Considering that the mansion might close for renovation after November 10, it would be wise to confirm current information before planning your visit.

For those who want to reach by public transport, the most practical option is the suburban train. Suburban lines departing from Sirkeci and integrated with Marmaray stop at Florya Station; it is possible to reach the mansion on foot from the station. Those coming from the Anatolian side can take Marmaray to Kazlıçeşme and then transfer to the suburban train.

Metrobus users can get off at the Florya stop and reach the mansion by taxi or on foot from there. For those coming by private car, parking facilities are available in the area, although finding a parking spot can be difficult in the summer months. Due to its location within Florya Atatürk Forest, remember that you need to buy a ticket before entering the mansion.

The most impressive photographic angle of the mansion is along the wooden pier extending over the sea. Especially in the early morning hours, with the calm surface of the Marmara in the background, the white facade of the mansion creates a striking contrast. Near sunset, the sea light also creates beautiful reflections on the structure.

Photography is not allowed in enclosed indoor areas; therefore, save your camera and phone for outdoor shots. The forested area around the mansion and the coastline also offer natural photographic frames. Seyfi Arkan's design features such as horizontal lines, large windows, and a simple facade are interesting elements for architectural photography.

There are various cafes and restaurants along the Florya coastline, right next to the mansion. Fish dishes and seafood are prominent in these venues with sea views. Since Florya is one of Istanbul's established coastal districts, old-style fish restaurants and modern cafes coexist.

Before or after your visit, you can have a picnic in the green areas of the nearby Florya Atatürk Forest or relax in the tea gardens. Large shopping centers are also located close to the area; however, simple venues along the coast offer a more harmonious experience to complement the historical atmosphere of the mansion.

The mansion is closed every Monday; plan your visit accordingly. It is mandatory to purchase a ticket for entry, and the Museum Pass is not valid at this venue. Visitors aged 65 and over can enter for free.

Photography is not allowed in enclosed indoor areas. Since the structure is built on piles over the sea, the use of wheelchairs and strollers is quite difficult; it is recommended to get information in advance regarding this. As renovation periods may occur after November 10, it would be wise to confirm the current opening information before setting your visit date. Also, keep in mind that you need to buy a ticket at the entrance to the mansion and that the entrance point is located within the forested area.

Arriving in Florya early in the morning and first visiting the Florya Atatürk Sea Mansion provides a great start to the day. Allocate approximately one to two hours for touring the mansion. Afterwards, you can take a short walk on the green paths of Florya Atatürk Forest.

At lunchtime, you can opt for seafood or a fish meal at one of the restaurants along the coastline. In the afternoon, you can head to Florya Beach and spend time by the sea. Completing the day by walking along the coast towards sunset allows you to experience this tranquil corner of Istanbul in all its aspects. Large shopping centers such as Mall of Istanbul are also located nearby.
