Tilmen Höyük

Tilmen Höyük is an important archaeological site rising in a fertile plain surrounded by branches of the Karasu River, near the İslahiye district of Gaziantep. The mound, with a diameter of 225 meters, is considered one of the largest Bronze Age settlements in Anatolia known for its walls, after Hattusha, the capital of the Hittites. The area, also recorded as one of the largest stone masonry centers in the Near East, has been continuously inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC.

The 8-meter-high round towers located in the northeast of the mound, with their 17 steps and ramped structure, are the most interesting point for visitors. These towers, built with tons of heavy stones, concretely demonstrate the advanced architectural culture of the society that lived here thousands of years ago.

The most suitable periods to visit Tilmen Höyük are spring and autumn. In April-May, the plain turns green, and temperatures are favorable for sightseeing. Similar comfort can be found in September-October. In summer, the İslahiye plain offers a hot and dry climate; in July-August, temperatures can sometimes exceed 40°C, making long outdoor excursions difficult. Although winter months are mild, the ground can be muddy on rainy days.

Tilmen Höyük is approximately 90 kilometers away from Gaziantep city center. Those using the Adana-Gaziantep highway can reach the İslahiye district by turning south from the Nurdağı junction. For the remaining 10 kilometers from İslahiye town center to the mound, taking a taxi or going by private car is the most practical way; there is no regular minibus or shared taxi service on this route.

Regular bus services operate from Gaziantep to İslahiye. After reaching İslahiye, it is possible to arrange with local taxi drivers to go to the mound and return. When traveling to the area by car, you can use Yelliburun village as a reference; the mound is located approximately 2 kilometers west of the village.

You can consider Tilmen Höyük as part of a day trip from Gaziantep city center. Start from Gaziantep in the morning and head to İslahiye; you can take a short break in the district and have a local breakfast. Then, proceed to the mound to explore the wall remains, round towers, and the mound platform, and start your return journey before noon. The nearby Yesemek Quarry and Sculpture Workshop on the same route is also a must-see stop; combining these two points will make your day much more productive.

The best photo spot at Tilmen Höyük is the round towers in the northeast. In the morning light, the texture of the stones and the play of shadows create extremely impressive images. When you climb to the top of the mound, the panoramic view of the plain surrounded by the branches of the Karasu River also offers a frame that will please photography enthusiasts. Those carrying a wide-angle lens can get into a more advantageous position to frame the extension of the city walls and the general silhouette of the mound.

Since the area is an open-air archaeological park, the ground is largely natural soil; choose comfortable walking shoes. Sun protection and plenty of water are essential in summer. Part of the road leading to the mound is stabilized and suitable for vehicle passage, but caution is required in rainy weather. It is a legal requirement not to touch archaeological remains and not to take any stones or artifact pieces from the site. Since there are no markets or cafes nearby, bring your own food and drinks.

Dining options immediately around Tilmen Höyük are quite limited. The nearest restaurants are in İslahiye town center. İslahiye hosts small artisan restaurants offering simple but delicious interpretations of Gaziantep cuisine. Lahmacun, various kebabs, and local soups can be easily found in the district. For a more comprehensive Gaziantep culinary experience, you will have the opportunity when you return to the city center at the end of the day.
