When to Visit Gaziantep?

The most ideal times to visit Gaziantep are during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) months. During these seasons, the weather is mild, allowing you to comfortably explore historical sites and bazaars on foot. In spring, the city's surroundings turn green, and Antep pistachio orchards bloom; this scenery adds a special beauty to your trip.

In the summer months (June-August), temperatures can rise to 35-40 degrees Celsius. If you plan to spend your summer holiday in Gaziantep, we recommend going out in the early morning and spending the afternoons indoors, in museums, or in shaded bazaars. Although winter months are cold and sometimes rainy, it is a very suitable period to explore museums and historical inns; moreover, the city is much quieter in winter.

October is the period when the Antep pistachio harvest is completed and the city experiences its liveliest atmosphere; it is especially recommended for this reason.

How to Get to Gaziantep?

By Plane: Gaziantep Oğuzeli Airport offers regular flights from Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and other major cities. The airport is approximately 20 kilometers from the city center. You can reach the city center from the airport by taxi or airport shuttles.

By Bus: There are regular bus services to Gaziantep from many cities in Turkey. The intercity bus terminal (Gaziray Terminal) is integrated into the city's transportation network, and from there, it is possible to transfer to the city center by public transport vehicles. Especially from nearby cities like Adana, Kahramanmaraş, and Şanlıurfa, bus travel is a very practical option.

By Car: Gaziantep is located on important highway routes in Turkey. It is approximately 1,100 kilometers from Istanbul and about 700 kilometers from Ankara. The roads leading into the city are well-maintained, and signs are sufficiently clear.

By Train: Gaziantep has a train connection; however, travel times can be long compared to other options. We recommend checking TCDD's official channels for current schedule information.

City Transportation

The backbone of urban transportation in Gaziantep is formed by Gaziulaş municipal buses and the Gaziantep Kart system. With Gaziantep Kart, you can travel affordably by bus; the card is subject to different tariffs for urban and rural lines. The card can be obtained from sales points at bus stops and various dealers.

Important points such as historical bazaars, Gaziantep Castle, and Zeugma Mosaic Museum are located quite close to each other; exploring these areas on foot is both enjoyable and practical. If you want to feel the historical texture of the city, walking through the narrow streets will offer much more than renting a car.

Taxi and app-based car services are also widely used in the city. If you want to go to distant points like Rumkale, renting a car or using agencies that organize tours will be more practical.

Places to Visit in Gaziantep

Zeugma Mosaic Museum: As one of the largest mosaic museums in the world, Zeugma should be the first stop for every visitor to Gaziantep. Roman-era mosaics, sculptures, and fresco fragments are exhibited here. The Gypsy Girl mosaic, which has become the symbol of the museum, is among the must-see works.

Gaziantep Castle: This historical castle, rising right in the center of the city, has a history dating back to the Hittite period. The Şahinbey National Struggle Museum (Gaziantep War Museum) located inside the castle, showcases the traces of the War of Independence in these lands.

Coppersmiths' Bazaar (Bakırcılar Çarşısı): This bazaar, with its hammering sounds and the smell of copper, takes you to a different time and is a living witness to Gaziantep's handicraft tradition. It is also a unique stop for those looking for souvenirs.

Bayazhan Gaziantep City Museum: Established inside a historical inn, this museum presents the social and cultural history of the city with a unique narrative. The architecture of the building itself is worth seeing.

Gaziantep Archaeology Museum: It houses a comprehensive collection that tells the history of the region from the prehistoric period to the Ottoman era.

Rumkale: Located approximately 60 kilometers from the city center, this impressive castle rising on the banks of the Euphrates River stands out with both its historical and natural beauties. It is possible to reach the castle by boat tours.

Almacı Bazaar and Historical Inns: These places, reflecting the city's historical trade fabric, offer a wide variety of products, from spices to local goods.

Where to Stay in Gaziantep?

Accommodation options in Gaziantep are quite diverse. Historic mansion hotels are an ideal choice for those who want to experience the city's unique atmosphere; you can feel the spirit of the city more deeply by staying in restored Ottoman-era buildings. These boutique hotels are usually within walking distance of the historical bazaars and Gaziantep Castle.

There are also mid-range hotels in the city center that cater to every budget. International chain hotels can be preferred by those looking for more comfortable and standard accommodation. Şahinbey and Şehitkamil districts are suitable areas for accommodation in terms of ease of transportation.

If you want to keep your budget tight, there are also various pension and hostel options in the city. We recommend paying attention to proximity to the historical center when choosing accommodation; this way, you can both explore on foot and easily discover local restaurants.

What to Eat in Gaziantep?

Gaziantep cuisine is one of Turkey's richest and most talked-about regional cuisines. Eating in Gaziantep, recognized by UNESCO as a city of gastronomy, is a cultural experience in itself.

Baklava: Antep pistachio baklava is the city's most important flavor opening to the world. Do not leave without tasting fresh and skillfully made baklava from the city's established baklava shops.

Kebabs: Kebab culture in Gaziantep is deeply rooted. Ali Nazik kebab (lamb served with roasted eggplant and yogurt), beyran soup, and katmer are among the must-try delicacies.

Katmer: This thin pastry dessert prepared with Antep pistachios and clotted cream is a traditional flavor eaten for breakfast. There are established katmer makers in the city who continue this tradition.

Liver kebab (Ciğer kebabı): Gaziantep-style liver, thinly sliced and grilled over embers, holds a special place among the city's street foods.

Antep pistachio products: Pistachio Turkish delight, pistachio sucuk (sausage-like sweet), and various sweets are preferred both for eating and as souvenirs. Almacı Bazaar and historical bazaars are the right addresses to find these products.

Beyran soup: This rich and nutritious soup, made with lamb and consumed in the early morning, is a unique Gaziantep tradition. Don't miss the established beyran salons that open early in the morning.

Shopping in Gaziantep

Gaziantep is one of Turkey's richest shopping destinations in terms of handicrafts and local products. The Coppersmiths' Bazaar (Bakırcılar Çarşısı) is an indispensable stop for copper-embossed trays, coffee pots, and decorative objects. Artisans still work with traditional methods in the bazaar and also produce custom items upon order.

The Almacı Bazaar is the right address for spices, nuts, and local products. You can find Antep pistachios, red pepper flakes, isot, and various spices here at much more affordable prices. Local molasses, tahini, and various pickles are also among the favorites of this bazaar.

For those looking for souvenirs, hand-woven textile products, copper objects, and pistachio sweets are the most popular options. Shops around the historical bazaars distinctly differ from standard souvenir shops in tourist areas in terms of unique and quality products.

Budget Planning in Gaziantep

Gaziantep is a destination that can be explored with a quite reasonable budget compared to Turkey's major tourist cities. There are options for different budgets in terms of accommodation, food, and transportation.

Museum entrances: Important venues such as the Zeugma Mosaic Museum and Gaziantep Archaeology Museum have entrance fees. Museum Card holders can visit these places at a discount or for free. Since fees may change over time, we recommend checking current information before your visit.

Food: Food in Gaziantep is extremely affordable compared to its taste. It is possible to find budget-friendly options for a satisfying meal in local restaurants located in the historical center. The price of baklava varies depending on the shop and quality.

Transportation: Public transportation within the city is quite economical with Gaziantep Kart. Since most of the places in the historical center are within walking distance, you can keep your transportation expenses to a minimum.

Overall, Gaziantep is a suitable city for both budget and mid-range travelers. Especially in terms of food and shopping, you will feel that you get more than your money's worth.
