Alemşah Kümbeti is a Seljuk-Ilkhanid period tomb located opposite the Grand Mosque in Sivrihisar, built in 1327–1328 by Melikşah Bey for his martyred brother Sultan Şah.
Rising in the heart of Sivrihisar's historical fabric, north of the Grand Mosque, Alemşah Kümbeti is one of the rare examples of Seljuk and Ilkhanid architecture in Central Anatolia. The structure was built by Melikşah Bey in 1327–1328, during the reign of Ilkhanid Sultan Abu Sa'id Bahadur, in memory of his brother Sultan Şah, who was martyred in battle. Also known as Sultan Şah Tomb, the kümbet has managed to stand for centuries and has become one of the most valuable historical heritage sites in the region.
The two-story, square-plan structure is built of cut stone, with occasional use of brick also noticeable. The lower floor houses the crypt section, while the upper floor serves as a prayer room; this arrangement is a typical reflection of the classical kümbet tradition. The point most emphasized by visitors is the door, which they describe as one of the finest examples of stone craftsmanship. The low door opening, which requires visitors to bend down to enter, leaves a profound impression; many interpret this experience as an architectural expression of humility. With the surrounding landscaping work, the kümbet, together with the Grand Mosque, has gained the appearance of an integrated historical area, making it an indispensable stop on a Sivrihisar trip.

During these periods, the weather is neither scorching nor freezing; walking through the historical streets of the district is truly enjoyable. About the Structure
Alemşah Kümbeti, belonging to the Ilkhanid period, was built by Melikşah Bey in 1327–1328 in memory of his brother Sultan Şah, who was martyred in battle. For this reason, the structure is also known as Sultan Şah Tomb. The square-plan, two-story structure has a crypt section on the lower floor and a prayer room on the upper floor; this plan scheme is a characteristic feature of the Anatolian Seljuk kümbet tradition.
The structure is predominantly built of cut stone, with brick also used in some sections. The most striking element for visitors is the meticulously crafted door opening with its stone carvings. Since the door is kept low, one must bend to enter; this situation is interpreted by visitors as carrying a deep meaning. This area, which has been landscaped together with the Grand Mosque, has become one of the most photographed corners of Sivrihisar.
Photo Spots
The most striking photographic angle of Alemşah Kümbeti is the shots taken from in front of the stone-carved door. The geometric and floral motifs on the door create a very impressive image in close-up photos. To capture the Grand Mosque and the kümbet in the same frame, it is enough to step back a few paces from the kümbet. While midday sunlight highlights the texture on the stone surfaces, soft light in the morning and evening hours adds a different depth to the structure.
