QUICK ANSWER

The Yusuf Ziya Pasha Complex is an 18th-century complex built in the Keban district of Elazığ between 1794-1798; consisting of a mosque, library, fountain, and tomb, the structure is a prominent example of Ottoman provincial architecture with its cut stone masonry and 1798 inscriptions.

The Yusuf Ziya Pasha Complex was built by Yusuf Ziya Pasha between 1794 and 1798 during his governorship of Erzurum. The complex is gathered around a courtyard: a mosque, library, and fountain; a little further away are a tomb and a hammam. The madrasah section has not survived to the present day.

The mosque is a nearly square structure, measuring 20x21 meters, built of cut stone. Due to the slope of the land, the qibla wall remained exposed and was supported by two large buttresses; the corners on this side were chamfered and inscriptions were placed. The last prayer section, due to the slope, is closed on the east side, colonnaded, and has five bays. The central section is raised to the eaves level and covered with a dome with internal pendentives and an external octagonal drum. The courtyard is entered through three gates; while descending by stairs from the northeast and northwest gates, one reaches the courtyard by exiting through the southern gate. Inscriptions bearing the date 1212 (1798) are found on the pediment of the northeast gate and above the arch of the northwest gate.

The structure was restored by the General Directorate of Foundations in 1965-1966 and reopened for worship with the latest restoration completed at the end of 2022. The phrase "Perform your prayer immediately before time runs out" in its inscription is one of the details that attract the attention of those entering the mosque.

About the Complex

Yusuf Ziya Pasha had this complex built between 1794 and 1798 when he was the governor of Erzurum. Yusuf Ziya Pasha, who later rose to the position of Grand Vizier, is known as the most prominent among the governors who served in the Keban provincial center. The complex is gathered around a courtyard: a mosque, library, and fountain; a little further away are a tomb and a hammam. The madrasah section has not survived to the present day.

Architectural Details

The mosque is built of cut stone, with a nearly square plan measuring 20x21 meters. Due to the slope of the land, the qibla wall remained exposed and was supported by two large buttresses. There is a small third buttress and a pointed arched fountain at the southern corner. The last prayer section is colonnaded, with arched openings, and has five bays; the central section is covered with an octagonal drum dome, while the other sections bear sail vaults. The 1798 inscriptions on the northeast and northwest gates offer good details for photography.

When to Visit

The mosque is open for visitors from morning prayer until night prayer. Silence is required during prayer times, so it is more appropriate to keep visits short during these hours. Large student groups are advised to notify in advance.

How to Get There

Keban is reached by road from Elazığ city center. Upon reaching the Keban district center, the complex greets you on a hill, close to the center. Going by private car is the most practical way; for public transport options, you can inquire about Keban services from Elazığ bus station.

Duration of Visit

30-45 minutes is sufficient to visit the complex. While in Keban, adding Keban Dam and the lake view points to your itinerary will make your day more fulfilling.

Things to Consider

The mosque is an active place of worship, so visits may be restricted during prayer times. The phrase "perform your prayer immediately before time runs out" in the inscription also reminds of this sensitivity. The structure was reopened for worship after the restoration completed in 2022, so minor landscaping work may still be seen around it.

What to See Nearby

Visitors to Keban usually add Keban Dam and the scenic viewpoints along the lake shore to their itinerary. The Konak Hammam, endowed by Yusuf Ziya Pasha, also stands as another historical structure in the district, which can be an additional stop for those with time.
