Black Stork Canyon is a 3-kilometer canyon on the banks of the Euphrates River in Baskil, Elazığ, home to black storks. The natural collapse in Tepesidelik Cave is remarkable; boat tours range from 150-350 TL.
Black Stork Canyon stretches along the banks of the Euphrates River, within the borders of Kumlutarla village, Baskil district. It takes its name from the Black Stork birds, whose global population is estimated at 10-15 thousand pairs, and which nest here in the summer months. The canyon starts 2 km north of Kumlutarla village and continues for about 3 km along the Euphrates. Tectonic uplift and the deep erosion by the Euphrates have worked together, resulting in a valley with steep slopes.
Tepesidelik Cave, located in the middle of the canyon, is a highlight of the trip. The natural collapse in the cave's ceiling opens like a giant window right in the middle of the canyon; it contains a freshwater spring. The cave systems on the slopes were formed by natural erosion but have also been used by humans throughout history. Traces of stairs carved into the rocks are still visible.
Getting here is not easy. Visitor comments consistently complain about the road conditions: stony, winding, with some sections where the vehicle road ends and turns into a walking path, and inadequate signage. One comment states that navigation does not show part of the road, and a 4 km section needs to be walked. Despite this, there are also comments that find its nature quiet and impressive. It is not possible to descend directly into the canyon by road; the real experience is had by taking boats from the coasts of Malatya or Baskil.

When to Visit
April-October is the most suitable period; black storks nest in the canyon during these months. Between November-March, surfaces become slippery, and waves can form in the Euphrates, so these months are not recommended. Late summer is preferred for both bird watching and more stable road conditions.
How to Get There
From Elazığ city center, proceed to Baskil district and head towards Kumlutarla village, a total distance of approximately 50 km. After Baskil, the road is stony, winding, and narrow; it can pose a risk to vehicle tires. Signage and markings are insufficient, and navigation apps do not show some road sections. After the vehicle road ends, kilometers of walking may be required. For this reason, some visitors prefer to rent a boat directly from the coasts of Baskil or Malatya.
How Much Time to Allocate
If you go via the hiking route, allow approximately 4 hours, including the canyon tour. If a boat tour is preferred, the duration decreases to 1-2 hours, but the chance to see different scenic angles along the way is reduced. Add travel time for round trip to your plan, especially if starting from Elazığ city center.
Route Suggestion
Saklıkapı Canyon and Black Stork Canyon in the region can be visited together. The total walking distance for both canyons is approximately 6.9 km, with an easy difficulty level. The route starting from Saklıkapı and continuing to Black Stork offers two different canyon experiences within the day. At the end of the valley, you get out of the vehicle and start walking by following the sign.
Things to Consider
The terrain is rocky and steep, so sturdy hiking shoes are required. Phone reception can be weak in some areas. The risk is high for those considering going by motorcycle; many comments mention the possibility of vehicle tire damage. The surroundings are empty and secluded, with no markets or fountains nearby; water and food should be carried with you. Take your trash back, and be careful when lighting fires.
Photo Spots
The natural collapse in the ceiling of Tepesidelik Cave offers the most dramatic shots during hours when sunlight enters. The steep rocky slopes of the canyon and the meanders of the Euphrates are suitable for wide-angle shots. For those who want to photograph black storks, a patient and quiet wait is required, as the birds are sensitive to human voices.
Camping and Accommodation
There are flat areas suitable for pitching tents around the canyon. Since there are no facilities in the region, campers need to carry their own water, food, and all equipment. There are apricot and almond orchards in nearby villages, which can be explored along the Euphrates riverbank.
