Saklıkapı Canyon

The period from April to October is the most suitable time for the canyon. Between November and March, the ground becomes slippery, and due to fluctuations in the Euphrates, passage is not recommended during these months. The small amount of water flowing in the canyon during summer provides coolness. Visitors therefore state that going in summer is more enjoyable.

From Elazığ, reach Baskil district by road, then continue towards Akuşağı Village. From Baskil center, follow the Morahron Church road, pass Işıklar Village, then turn onto a dirt road. The hike begins at the Saklıkapı Canyon sign after the point where the car is left. Some visitors state that map applications direct them to the wrong location, into a cove instead of the canyon. Therefore, following physical signs along the way is more reliable. Alternatively, access to the canyon can also be provided by boat via the Euphrates River.

The hiking route within the canyon is approximately 5.4 km one way, taking a total of 3-4 hours for a round trip. Although classified as easy difficulty, some rock passages require attention. It is possible to go from Elazığ and return on the same day. However, considering the travel time, a large part of the day needs to be allocated to this trip.

Saklıkapı Canyon can be visited in conjunction with Karaleylek Canyon, which is located in the same region. The two canyons together form a route of approximately 6.9 km and can be seen consecutively on the same day. Karaleylek Canyon is named after the endangered black stork bird and was discovered at the same time as Saklıkapı.

In some parts of the canyon, the passage narrows, and some visitors report being unable to proceed at these points. For families with children, the section up to the first rock passage is recommended, while further sections are left for more experienced hikers. Non-slip footwear is essential. Those who go with ordinary sports shoes struggle on the rocky terrain or state that their shoes get worn out. Take enough water with you; there are no sales points along the route.

The natural gate passage, from which the canyon takes its name, is the most photographed spot. The angle of light hitting the rocks in the narrow gorges creates interesting contrasts, especially at noon. The section where the canyon opens to the Euphrates River is also suitable for wide-angle shots.

Saklıkapı was a place little known outside the local community until 2019. Photos taken by a villager collecting mushrooms in the area gained attention when they spread on social media, after which the then Governor of Elazığ, Çetin Oktay Kaldırım, named it "Saklıkapı." The discovery of marine creature fossils on the rocks also attracts the interest of researchers regarding the region's geological past. Some visitors advocate for the preservation of this place in its natural state, while others believe that controlled tourism will both protect the region and contribute to the local people.
