Sinan Ağa Fountain was commissioned in 1669 (H. 1080) by Sinan Ağa, who rose from the position of Chief of the Gardeners to the rank of Pasha. It stands in Yeniimaret District, right next to the Bayezid II Complex. It is a public square fountain with a rectangular plan and three facades; the side facing the mosque is left blind, meaning water appears to flow only from three directions.
The structure is built from dressed stone and covered with a pyramidal stone roof. Small columns with hourglass-shaped bases and capitals adorn the corners facing the street; each pointed arch has a rosette carved into its keystone. An inscription on the western facade contains verses about Sinan Ağa's name and the date of construction. Records differ regarding the water source: according to some sources it came from a spring in the Aynalı Tabya gardens, while others indicate it came from the Bugdayci Fountain source, located half an hour away from the city. Edirne historian Badi Efendi wrote that the water was brought via iron pipes and began flowing in August 1310 (around 1892).
It is unclear whether Sinan Ağa was the first to bring this water or whether he repaired existing aqueducts; sources differ on this point. The structure still stands today and can be easily added to a visit of the Bayezid II Complex as a short stop during a walk through the Yeniimaret area.
Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
The fountain is in an open area and can be viewed at any time. Spring and autumn are generally more comfortable for visiting Edirne; visiting after midday during summer heat is more convenient. Light hits the western facade in the afternoon, which is advantageous for those who want to notice the inscription and rosette details.
How to Get There
The fountain is located on 2nd Beyazıd Street in Yeniimaret District. It is within walking distance from Edirne center; a 15-20 minute walk is sufficient for those coming from the city center. If you drive, there is parking around the complex area, but walking is more practical to avoid city center traffic.
Visit Together with Bayezid II Complex
The fountain is adjacent to the eastern facade of the Bayezid II Complex. Visitors to the Health Museum within the complex can reach this fountain just a few steps away upon exit. No need to plan a separate route; it can be seen as a natural part of a complex visit.
How Much Time to Allocate
The fountain itself can be walked around and photographed in 10-15 minutes. If you add a complex tour as well, allocating about an hour total time is sufficient.
Route Suggestion
When exploring Edirne's Yeniimaret area, you can follow a route of the Bayezid II Complex, the Health Museum, and then Sinan Ağa Fountain in sequence. Since this area is somewhat distant from the Selimiye Mosque and Old Mosque route in the city center, it makes sense to plan it as a separate walking tour.
Important Notes
The fountain is not currently functional for water use; it is no longer flowing. The visit is purely for its architectural and historical value. Since sources contain different information about the fountain's water source and construction purpose, it is healthier to treat the information from guides or plaques as a reference rather than absolute truth.
Good Photography Spots
The inscription stone on the western facade and the rosettes on the arch above are the most striking details. Close-up shots of the hourglass-shaped columns at the corners better show the structure's craftsmanship. To capture the pyramidal roof as a whole, you need to shoot from a distance, from the opposite sidewalk.
