Bayezid Bridge stands over the Tunca River, right next to the Complex of Sultan Bayezid II. It dates back to 1488. It is believed to have been built by Architect Hayrettin. It is 78 meters long, constructed with cut stone, crossing the water with 5 pointed arch spans. The arch span reaches 10 meters; as you cross it, you see the water flowing beneath through a wide opening.
Most visitors to the Külliye (today's Health Museum) do not leave without seeing the bridge. The two are almost in the same courtyard. The bridge is still in use; vehicles pass over it, and one can easily cross on foot. The wear on the stones shows how busy this passage has been for centuries.
Its proximity to the center of Edirne makes Bayezid Bridge an easily addable stop to a city tour. It can be reached on foot or by a short car ride. No special planning is required.
Guide's Note
About Bayezid Bridge
The bridge can be considered part of the complex built by Bayezid II in Edirne. It is both functional and a structure that completes the visual integrity of the complex. Built where the Tunca River flows relatively wide, it crosses the water with its 5 pointed arches. Its cut stone masonry has ensured its survival for centuries; today, it is still open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
When to Visit
Since the bridge is an open-air venue, it can be visited all year round. Spring and autumn months are preferred: both the water level of the Tunca River looks more pleasant during this period, and the weather is cool for walking. In summer, it is more comfortable to go in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.
How to Get There
Since it is located close to the center of Edirne, it can be reached by public transport or on foot. For those starting from the city center, a 15-20 minute walk is sufficient. For those going by car, there are suitable parking areas around the bridge.
Suggested Route
It is most logical to visit Bayezid Bridge together with the adjacent Complex of Sultan Bayezid II (Health Museum). After visiting the complex, crossing the bridge and walking a bit along the Tunca River is a good intermediate stop before continuing to other historical structures in the center of Edirne (Selimiye Mosque, Old Mosque).
Photo Spots
To see the arch spans of the bridge as a whole, it is necessary to take photos from the riverbank, moving a little further away. During periods of high water level, the reflection of the arches in the water provides interesting shots. In photos taken from the bridge, the flow direction of the Tunca River and the riparian vegetation stand out.
Things to Consider
Since the bridge is still open to vehicle traffic, care must be taken when crossing on foot; sidewalk width is limited. The stone surface is worn in some places and can become slippery, especially in rainy weather. Crossing with a stroller or wheelchair is not easy, as the stone surface is uneven.
