Sarıkaya Mağarası, Düzce'nin Yığılca ilçesinde 717 metre uzunluğunda, kireçtaşı içine oyulmuş yarı aktif fosil mağara olup sarkıt ve dikitleriyle Batı Karadeniz'in en büyüklerinden biridir.
Sarikaya Magarasi is located just near Sarikaya village in Yizilca district of Duzce, a natural formation carved into a limestone mass. According to geologists, it is a semi-active fossil cave that developed with semi-horizontal inclination within Paleocene-Lower Eocene aged limestone, located below ground level. Its total length reaches 717 meters, and the interior height reaches up to 40 meters in some sections. These measurements make it one of the largest caves in Western Black Sea. It is protected as a first-degree archaeological site.
The ceiling height at the entrance section immediately catches attention. In the advancing sections, there are stalactites and stalagmites, as well as wall textures shaped by the limestone over the years. A frequently mentioned point in visitor reviews is that the cave has both an impressive and somewhat eerie feeling. It stays cool inside on hot days, which is why it is a preferred stop for cooling off during summer months. Asthma patients should be careful, as breathing can become difficult in sections with high humidity.
Around the cave there are pavilions, ready barbecue areas, water and toilet facilities. Therefore, some visitors extend their visit beyond just the cave and add a picnic. The parking lot is small, so parking can be a bit difficult during weekend traffic. Those coming from Akcakoca note that the road is smooth and navigation can be a bit off for the entrance point, but following the signs resolves the issue.
Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
The cave interior stays cool year-round, and those visiting especially during summer heat notice this difference immediately. Late spring and summer months are preferred because the village road is dry and easily passable. During winter months, slipperiness can occur on dirt roads after rain, so if you are going during this period we recommend checking your vehicle tires and road conditions in advance.
How to Get to Sarikaya Magarasi
From Duzce center, head towards Yizilca and follow the signs on the road to reach Sarikaya village. The cave is approximately 1.5 km from the village, and about 5 km from Yizilca district center. Total distance from the city center is approximately 36 km. Those coming from Akcakoca also note that the road is smooth and you can travel comfortably at an average speed of 80-90 km per hour. Navigation applications may show the entrance point slightly earlier than the actual location; in this case, following the road signs is the safest solution. Public transportation options are limited beyond private vehicles, so traveling with your own vehicle or organized tours is more practical.
How Much Time to Spend
The cave tour itself takes 1-2 hours; walking through controlled areas to see the galleries and rock formations is sufficient. If you also plan to use the pavilion and picnic area nearby, a half-day program is more comfortable. If you add the nearby Aksu Waterfall to your route, the day is complete.
Other Nearby Stops
It makes sense to combine Sarikaya Magarasi with other natural sites in the Yizilca region. Aksu Waterfall is another natural point worth visiting in the area and can be toured together with the cave. Since the area is also surrounded by plateaus, those with time available can also take a short nature tour along the village roads in Yizilca.
Things to Pay Attention To
The cave interior is humid and cool; visitors with asthma or respiratory problems should keep this in mind. In some sections the ceiling is low and the ground can be wet and slippery, so wearing non-slip shoes makes your visit easier. Since parking capacity is limited, going early on busy dates (summer weekends) reduces parking difficulties.
Good Photography Spots
The high ceiling at the cave entrance and sections where natural light strikes are the most visually striking areas for photography. Stalactite and stalagmite formations in the advancing galleries reveal different textures especially with flashlight or hand-held light. Frames from the pavilion area outside looking towards the cave entrance also well reflect the surrounding character.
Geological Features of the Cave
Sarikaya Magarasi is defined as a semi-active fossil cave that developed with semi-horizontal inclination within a limestone mass at an underground level. This means the cave has both actively forming sections still shaped by water influence, as well as fossilized sections that no longer experience water effects. This structure, created over thousands of years through the dissolution process of limestone, has been protected with first-degree archaeological site status.
