Prusias ad Hypium Antik Kenti, Düzce'nin Konuralp Mahallesi'nde yer alan, MÖ 3. yüzyıldan kalma Roma tiyatrosu ve su kemerleriyle bilinen antik kenttir. Giriş ücretsiz olup, ziyaret 30-45 dakika sürmektedir.
As soon as you enter Konuralp, this hill, first called Hypios and then Kieros, appears before you. When King Prusias I conquered it between 230-182 BC and gave it his name, the city's most brilliant period began. The ancient theater is the most important structure still standing today. It was built from limestone according to Vitruvius' symmetrical plan, with marble used for column capitals and bases. Locals call it "Forty Steps."
As you wander around the theater, you'll come across the remains of the acropolis, aqueducts, the equestrian gate, and city walls. A little further on are the Roman bridge and bath ruins. Visitor comments frequently mention that the acoustics are still impressive, and some point out the beauty of the mosaics in the excavation area. However, there are also many complaints about inadequate protection and spray paint marks on the walls. Excavation work continues, and a different section may have been uncovered with each visit.
Some of the artifacts unearthed from the city are exhibited in the nearby Konuralp Museum. The Konuralp Tomb is located directly opposite the ancient city, making it logical to visit both on the same walk. If you are passing through Düzce city center, it is a suitable stop for both a 10-15 minute break and for those who want to dedicate more time to history.
Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
As the ancient city is an open-air site, it can be visited all year round, but spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. In summer, as shade is limited, it is more comfortable to go before noon or in the late afternoon. Since excavation work is ongoing, some sections may be cordoned off from time to time, which is normal.
How to Get There
From Düzce city center, it is easily accessible by private car by following the Konuralp signs, the distance is around 5-8 km. If you are using public transport, bus number 30 (Osmanca-Konuralp-Yeni Hastane line) passes near the ancient city. The nearest stop is K12 Konuralp, from there it's a few minutes' walk. The first service is around 07:06 AM, the last service is around 11:14 PM; check current times on the local public transport app.
What to See in Konuralp
The Konuralp Tomb is located directly opposite the ancient city, making it very practical to visit both on the same walk. A walking trail is also nearby, suitable for those who want to add a short nature break. Some of the unearthed artifacts are exhibited in the Konuralp Museum, and most visitors to the ancient city also stop by the museum.
How Much Time to Allocate
30-45 minutes is sufficient for just the ancient city. If you add the Konuralp Museum and the tomb, plan for half a day. You can easily fit Prusias ad Hypium into a one-day itinerary in Düzce.
Good Spots for Photos
The view from the cavea (seating) section of the theater looking towards the stage building is the most preferred shot. Morning light makes the stone texture more prominent. The aqueducts and the Roman bridge are also lesser-known but highly photogenic spots.
Things to Pay Attention To
Since it is an excavation site, there are uneven grounds and pits in places, so prefer sturdy shoes. Some visitors point out damage and spray paint marks on the walls; the area is still not fully protected, so it is important to explore without touching valuable details (like mosaics). The ground is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
History of the Ancient City
The city's roots begin with the name Hypios, then it was known as Kieros. With the conquests of King Prusias I between 230-182 BC, the city took its current name. The theater, built in the Hellenistic period, was expanded with additions during the Roman period. With a capacity of 10,000 people, it is considered one of the largest structures in the region. Dedicatory inscriptions also mention other monumental structures such as the agora, boule, and baths, but most of these are still underground.
