Eumania Ancient City

The most suitable seasons to visit Eumania Ancient City are spring and autumn. In April, May, September, and October, the air temperature remains at favorable levels for walking. Since the area covers a wide surface, exploring in mid-summer, especially during midday, can become significantly difficult. Previous visitors say they prefer the early morning hours or late afternoon on hot days.

For those wishing to come by public transport, there are regular minibus services from Denizli bus station to Çivril district. After reaching Çivril, you can transfer to Işıklı Neighborhood also by minibus. Those coming by car should follow the Denizli-Ankara Highway for 30 km, then turn north onto the Denizli-Uşak road from Kaklık Neighborhood and continue for approximately another 60 km. The ancient city is located within the borders of Işıklı town on the Çivril-Dinar highway.

1 hour might be enough for a superficial look at Eumania Ancient City; however, for those who want to examine the ruins in detail, read information panels, and take photos, 2–3 hours is a more realistic duration. Since the area is large, planning a brisk walk will make your job easier. If you combine it with other historical sites in and around Çivril, you can create a full-day program.

If you are departing from Denizli city center, you can also add Çivril district to your itinerary. Upon arriving in Işıklı town, first explore the surroundings to see the general silhouette of the ancient city; then focus on the Byzantine castle ruins and Hellenistic period structures. You can also closely examine the ongoing archaeological excavation sites in the area. Finishing the day with lunch in Çivril and stopping at other historical sites in Denizli on the way back could be a good option.

Eumania's most striking photo opportunities are offered by the castle walls integrated with the natural rock mass. The plain landscape stretching in the background of the ruins is very suitable for wide-angle shots. For those who want to photograph the standing structural parts up close, morning light yields softer results. Archaeological excavation sites are also an interesting option for documentary-style shots.

Since the area is large and mostly open terrain, the risk of sunstroke in summer months should not be overlooked. A hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water are essential. The ground is uneven and rocky in places, so high heels or sandals are not suitable. Find out in advance if there are any sales points in the area; complete all your necessary provisions from Çivril before coming. Eumania was founded in the 2nd century BC during the Pergamon Kingdom period by Eumenes II and named after him. This settlement, reflecting the urban planning approach of the Hellenistic period, continued its existence after the transition to Roman rule. During the Byzantine period, the strategic location offered by the natural rock mass was utilized, and the area was transformed into a castle. Seeing traces of these two different periods in the same area makes Eumania one of the lesser-known but valuable ancient cities in the Denizli region. Most of the artifacts unearthed during excavations are exhibited in museums in the region today.
