Laodicea Ancient City

The best time to visit Laodicea is in April and May. During these seasons, the weather is mild, and the ground is covered with poppies and daisies; this scenery combined with the ancient structures makes the city visually much more striking. In summer, the sun can be quite oppressive during midday. Visitors see the fact that the area is open until 21:00 in summer as a great advantage and recommend visiting in the cool evening to avoid the midday heat. At sunset, the columns and theater gain a different atmosphere. Coming in the early morning is a good choice for those who want to explore the area peacefully and take photos before tour groups get busy.

Laodicea Ancient City is located approximately 6 km from Denizli city center, within the borders of Eskihisar, Bozburun, and Goncalı neighborhoods. Since it is situated on the route to Pamukkale, you can combine the two ancient cities on the same day; the distance to Pamukkale is about a 10-15 minute drive. Parking is available for those coming by car; the fact that the ticket office is located before the parking lot can cause small congestions during entry hours. It can be easily reached from Denizli city center by taxi or private car.

Laodicea is one of the largest ancient cities in Turkey. Even if you want to pass through the area superficially, you need to allocate 2-3 hours. If you are interested in history and want to examine all the structures (stadium, theaters, church, agora, and baths) one by one, you need to set aside 4-5 hours. It is possible to fit it into the same day as Pamukkale; when planning both, allocating the morning for Laodicea and the afternoon for Pamukkale will provide a more efficient trip.

Laodicea offers a rich area for photography. The colorful mosaics in the church provide impressive shots in the morning and evening hours when the light is good. The column rows and the theater take on a completely different appearance at sunset; visitors particularly emphasize the atmosphere at these hours. There is a cafeteria within the ancient city; however, visitors state that the prices are quite high. Bringing enough water and snacks with you is important for both your budget and maintaining your energy during a long visit. After leaving Laodicea, there are many restaurant and cafe options in Denizli city center or Pamukkale district.

Since the area is quite large and the terrain is uneven, comfortable sports shoes with thick soles are essential. In summer, the sun is very harsh, so a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water are a must. Water and food prices at the cafeteria can be high; it is recommended to have them ready with you. The toilet facility at the entrance is free. Müzekart holders can enter directly without waiting in line at the ticket office. Laodicea was founded in the 3rd century BC by Seleucid King Antiochus II; during the Roman period, it became one of the richest and most populous trade cities in the region. Known for its banking, black wool textile, and medical school, the city also hosted one of the first seven churches built by Christianity in Anatolia. Although its immediate proximity to Hierapolis overshadows Laodicea's recognition, in terms of area size and structural diversity, it is one of the most comprehensive ancient cities in the region. As excavation and restoration works are still ongoing, it is possible to encounter a newly opened or better-preserved structure with each visit.
