Hırka Mosque

The best times to visit Hırka Mosque are spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During these seasons, the Tavas area is both green and has a mild climate. Since the region can be quite hot in summer, choosing morning hours will ensure a more comfortable visit. On Fridays, there is a congregation at the mosque around noon; those who wish to enter the harim during these hours should wait for the prayer to be completed.

From Denizli city center, there is approximately 60 km to Tavas district via the D585 highway. To reach Hırka Neighborhood from Tavas district center, you need to follow the Tavas-Kale road; the mosque is located approximately 500 meters off this road. Using a private car is both the fastest and most comfortable option. After arriving in Tavas by minibus or shared taxi from Denizli or Tavas, you can switch to a taxi. Typing "Hırka Camii, Tavas" into your navigation will direct you straight to the neighborhood.

The exterior of the mosque, with its texture combining rough hewn and rubble stone, offers an interesting photographic backdrop. The three-lobed recessed arch at the harim entrance and the inscription above it are ideal details for close-up shots. To frame the dome rising on an octagonal drum in its entirety, you need to move to the south or east of the structure. The wooden ceiling details of the last prayer section and the 22 wooden columns are prominent features in the interior. Coming before noon, when the light falls best, makes the stone texture more distinct.

Hırka Mosque is a simple yet meticulous example of Ottoman provincial architecture. The square-planned harim is covered by a dome resting on an octagonal drum. Rough hewn stone, rubble stone, and partially cut stone were used on the walls of the structure; only marble was preferred for the window sills and the harim entrance. On the east and west facades, there are three windows below and two above, while on the south facade, there are two windows in both rows. There are no windows on the north facade.

The last prayer section is accessed by a six-step staircase. The upper part of this section is covered with a flat wooden ceiling supported by 22 wooden columns; above the entrance part, there is a portico resting on four wooden columns. The three-lobed recessed arch above the harim door is decorated with a sawtooth motif; an inscription is located above the arch, and a second inscription containing the phrase "Sene 77" is at the entrance of the last prayer section. The minaret is built in the form of a cylindrical body on a square-sectioned base. A women's gallery is also located to the north of the harim.

Since Hırka Mosque is an active place of worship, you need to remove your shoes and wear appropriate clothing when entering. Female visitors are expected to cover their heads; it is advisable to bring a scarf with you. Some visitors state that there is damage to the structure's drains and gutters, and that facilities such as the ablution fountain (şadırvan) and toilets are lacking. It is recommended to have your basic needs met before planning a long visit. Since it is in a village, parking space is quite limited; you can leave your car at a suitable spot on the road and reach it on foot.

Since Hırka Neighborhood is a small settlement, restaurant options are almost non-existent. Visitors describe drinking tea at the village cafe right next to the mosque as a warm experience. For more comprehensive dining options, you need to return to Tavas district center. In Tavas, local eateries offer the simple flavors of Aegean cuisine; small artisan restaurants are a good choice for village breakfast and homemade meals.

Hırka Mosque is a structure that can be comfortably visited in half an hour. For those who want to take photos and examine architectural details, 45 minutes is sufficient. The mosque can be combined with other historical structures in Tavas district center or natural beauties in the vicinity to be included in a half-day excursion route.
