Balıkpazarı Mosque is a structure located in Gemlik's historical bazaar, built as a church by the Greek community in the late 19th century, and converted into a mosque after the 1923 population exchange.
Standing in the heart of Gemlik's historical bazaar, near the fish market, this mosque actually began its life as a Greek Orthodox church. Dating back to the late 19th century, the exact construction date is unknown as the building does not bear an inscription; it is said to have been known as Paragia by the Greek community of the period. After the 1923 population exchange, with the departure of the Greek population in Gemlik, the building was converted into a mosque and has been known as Balıkpazarı Mosque or New Mosque ever since.
The structure is built on a rectangular plan extending in an east-west direction. With a closed area of approximately 240 square meters on a 307 square meter plot, the mosque's roofing system consists of a large central dome surrounded by four semi-domes. This arrangement gives the building a spacious appearance from the inside and a simple yet impressive look from the outside. After the completion of restoration works carried out by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, the mosque was reopened for worship with a ceremony attended by Governor Yakup Canbolat, and today it continues to be an important part of Gemlik's religious and architectural memory.

Guide's Note
From Church to Mosque: A Brief History of the Structure
The story of Balıkpazarı Mosque begins with a church built by the Greek community living in Gemlik during the late Ottoman period. The exact date of construction is unknown as the building lacks an inscription; it is believed to date back to the late 19th century. This church, known as Paragia, lost its function after the Greek population in Gemlik migrated following the 1923 Turkish-Greek population exchange. It was soon converted into a mosque and named Balıkpazarı Mosque or New Mosque.
The structure is a concrete reflection of Gemlik's changing demographic and cultural history. This mosque, which cannot be considered independently from the bazaar texture it is located within, continues to be an interesting stop both architecturally and socially.
When to Visit?
If you want to comfortably see the interior of the mosque, you can prefer the hours after morning prayer or before noon. Keep in mind that it can be crowded during Friday prayer times; those planning to visit during these hours should consider prayer times.
Gemlik gains a distinct vibrancy during the olive harvest season (October-December). Visiting the mosque while exploring the district during this period offers a wonderful experience. For those spending time on the coast of Gemlik Bay in the summer months, it can be considered a short historical stop.
How to Get There?
Regular bus and minibus services operate from Bursa city center to Gemlik. You can reach Gemlik from Bursa Intercity Bus Terminal or from stops near the Organized Industrial Zone. The journey takes approximately 45-60 minutes.
Once in Gemlik, the mosque is located in the central bazaar area of the district, near the fish market; it is possible to reach on foot. Those arriving by private car can look for parking around Av. Ali Aksoy Street, but caution is needed in narrow streets.
Photo Spots
The best point to view the building from the outside is the angle looking at the facade from the opposite sidewalk. The stone surfaces and dome silhouette, cleaned after restoration, offer beautiful shots, especially with soft light in the early morning hours.
Inside, looking up from directly under the central dome provides an interesting perspective for photographing the roofing system. When taking photos inside the mosque, be careful not to disturb anyone praying.
What to Eat Nearby?
Gemlik is a district known throughout the country for its olive oil and olives. Gemlik olive, a geographically indicated product, stands out with its small, black, and oily structure unique to the region. You can buy fresh olives and olive oil from grocers and local shops in the bazaar right next to the mosque.
Due to the district's proximity to the fish market, it is quite easy to find fresh fish and seafood in the surrounding restaurants. Especially at lunchtime, tasting fresh products from Marmara in fish restaurants has become an integral part of a visit to Gemlik.
Things to Know Before Visiting
The mosque is actively used for worship. During your visit, be quiet, avoid entering during prayer times, and come in appropriate attire. Female visitors are expected to cover their heads; coverings may be available at the entrance for those unprepared, but it is more practical to bring your own.
Since the building has no inscription, you may not find many informative signs on site. Doing a brief research on the history of the district before your visit will make what you see much more meaningful.
