Located at the westernmost tip of Bursa's historic Grand Bazaar area, Balibey Han holds a special place in our architectural history as the first three-story caravanserai of the Ottoman Empire. Built by Bali Bey, son of Niğbolu Sanjak Bey Hamza Bey, during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmed, the structure, with its 64 rooms and multi-story design, became one of the largest accommodation facilities of its time. Designed to meet both the accommodation and trade needs of merchant caravans arriving from outside the city, the han has been a symbol of Bursa's commercial vitality for centuries.
Also known as Vasıf Pasha Han in the 19th century, the structure has largely preserved its historical texture, although it lost a part of its original plan over time. Since 2009, Balibey Han has been re-functionalized as a traditional handicraft bazaar, and today it opens its doors to visitors with art workshops and exhibition areas. A natural cave waiting to be discovered is also located inside the han; this feature adds both historical and natural depth to the structure.

How to Get to Balibey Han?
Balibey Han is located in the Osmangazi district, the historical center of Bursa, between Hisar Gate and Kırkmerdivenler. If you use the Bursa metro, you can reach it in approximately 10-15 minutes by walking from the Şehreküstü or Heykel stations. When you proceed from Altıparmak Street or Fomara Square towards Ulucami, you will find the han at the beginning of the Tophane slopes. Municipal buses departing from many points of the city also stop in the historical bazaar area. If you come by car, you can use the parking lots around Ulucami.
History of Balibey Han
Balibey Han was built in the second half of the 15th century, during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmed. The founder of the structure is Bali Bey, son of Niğbolu Sanjak Bey Hamza Bey, who is thought to be the brother of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Bayezid Pasha. The han was designed to accommodate merchant caravans carrying goods to or buying goods from Bursa's Grand Bazaar. With its 64 rooms and three-story structure, it holds the distinction of being the first known multi-story caravanserai of the Ottoman Empire. Although its exact construction date is unknown as its inscription has not survived, the structure is dated to the second half of the 15th century. Also known as Vasıf Pasha Han in the 19th century, the structure was re-functionalized as a traditional handicraft bazaar starting from 2009.

It is recommended to confirm the access conditions to the natural cave section inside the han on-site; it is known to have been closed to visitors at various times in the past. Since the ground is stone-paved and uneven, choosing comfortable walking shoes will make your visit easier. Wheelchair or stroller use is quite difficult due to the architectural features of the structure.
