Ayvaini Cave

Ayvaini Cave is a 5.5-kilometer underground system, recorded as Turkey's sixth-longest cave. Extending between Bursa's Mustafakemalpaşa and Nilüfer districts, this cave is located in the southern part of Lake Uluabat, connecting Ayva Village and Doğanalan Village. Having two separate entrances makes it both a short excursion point and a long-term exploration route.

Inside, stalactites, stalagmites, and travertines, shaped over centuries, give the cave a unique atmosphere. Ayvaini, which is mostly frequented by experienced nature lovers and caving enthusiasts, is also a great stop for those who want to see the village texture around Bursa and the Lake Uluabat basin.

The cave's internal temperature remains relatively constant throughout the year; no matter how hot it is outside, a cool air greets you inside. However, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the most favorable periods for a visit. During these seasons, the ground is less slippery, the risk of rain is relatively low, and the surrounding nature is at its most vibrant.

For those overwhelmed by the scorching heat of summer, the cave offers a refreshing alternative. In winter, rainy and muddy ground conditions can make walking inside the cave difficult; visitors planning a trip during this period must wear sturdy, waterproof boots.

The most practical way to reach the cave is by private car. From Bursa city center, follow the Bursa-Balıkesir highway towards Mustafakemalpaşa; when you follow the Doğanalan Village sign on the north side of the road, you will reach one of the cave entrances. The entrance on the Nilüfer side can be accessed by going to Ayva Village via the Nilüfer district.

For those preferring public transport, buses operating from Bursa city center towards Mustafakemalpaşa or Nilüfer offer an option; however, the last few kilometers to the village may need to be completed by minibus or taxi. The distance to Bursa city center is approximately 43 kilometers.

The stalactite and stalagmite formations inside the cave yield very impressive shots with proper lighting. Carrying a headlamp or a powerful flashlight is important for both your safety and photo quality; natural light inside the cave is extremely limited.

The village texture just outside the cave entrances and the surrounding forest areas also provide a beautiful backdrop for photos. Especially in spring, the cave entrance combined with the surrounding greenery creates a nice contrast in daylight. With long exposure technique, the travertines and water puddles inside the cave can also yield interesting shots.

Ayvaini Cave has a different structure from fully developed tourist caves. Therefore, you need to make a few practical preparations before your visit.

Equipment: Make sure to bring a powerful flashlight or headlamp, non-slip and waterproof boots or hiking shoes, old clothes, and spare batteries. The cave floor can be slippery and damp in places. Safety: Given the risk of getting lost inside the cave, it is much more appropriate for inexperienced visitors to enter with a guide. Instead of trying to go alone, prefer to go in groups of at least two people. Getting up-to-date information from the local administration or village headman before your visit will also be helpful.

There are no restaurants or cafes immediately near the cave. We recommend bringing enough water and snacks with you when planning your visit. For a more comprehensive meal break, you will need to return to Mustafakemalpaşa district center or Bursa.

Mustafakemalpaşa is a district known for its small restaurants offering local flavors of Bursa cuisine. On your return route to Bursa, you can find the opportunity to try the city's famous dishes, especially İskender kebab.

You can combine your visit to Ayvaini Cave with the surroundings of Lake Uluabat to create a beautiful day trip route. You can leave Bursa early in the morning, first take a short walk along the shores of Lake Uluabat, and then proceed to the cave via Ayva Village. After exploring the cave, you can also include seeing the rural texture of the area by moving towards Doğanalan Village.

Since this entire route is close to Bursa city center, it can easily be planned as a day trip. For those who love photography, the light conditions at the cave entrance are particularly favorable in the morning hours.
