Old Doğanbey Village

Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are the most suitable periods for Old Doğanbey. During these months, the weather is pleasant for walking, and crowds are minimal. In July-August, the scorching heat of the Aegean can be quite oppressive on the stone streets; if you come in mid-summer, prefer the early morning hours. In winter, the village becomes deserted, and some small businesses close; however, for those seeking a melancholic and quiet atmosphere, this can turn into a different experience.

The easiest way to reach the village is by private car. From Söke, head towards Güllübahçe for about 30 km, then simply follow the Doğanbey sign on the road. The route is also quite clear for those coming from Kuşadası or Didim. Since the village is very close to the Ancient City of Priene, these two stops can be easily combined.

Public transport options are extremely limited; although there are minibus services from Söke to the region, it is difficult to reach the exact center of the village. Car rental or organized tour options offer more practical alternatives.

Important note: The streets within the village are very narrow and cobbled; we recommend parking at a suitable spot at the entrance and exploring on foot instead of driving in. Visitors particularly state that entering the village by car is problematic.

Old Doğanbey is a village where every corner invites you to take photos. The arched doorways of the stone houses and walls covered with climbing plants are perfect for capturing classic Aegean village scenes. As you climb to the upper parts of the village, a panoramic view of the Menderes delta opens up; this point is one of the most emphasized surprise views by visitors. The perspective plays of the narrow stone streets and the plants clinging to the walls of ruined houses also offer interesting compositions. Near sunset, in the golden hour light, the village looks particularly impressive.

Old Doğanbey is not a major gastronomic destination; however, there are a few small businesses selling gözleme and börek within the village. Visitors say these places are relatively affordable and friendly. If you plan to explore the village for a long time, it is recommended to bring water and light snacks. For a more comprehensive meal, it is more logical to head to restaurants in Güllübahçe or Söke.

Old Doğanbey can be combined with other historical and natural sites in its vicinity to create a wonderful day trip. The suggested order can be as follows:

1. Ancient City of Priene — Very close to the village, ideal for a morning visit.
2. Old Doğanbey Village — After leaving Priene, a walk and gözleme break in the village around noon.
3. Dilek Peninsula National Park — In the afternoon, coves within the park for sea and nature.

If you are staying in Didim or Kuşadası, you can easily complete this triple itinerary in a single day.

Keep a few practical points in mind before visiting the village. Using a stroller is almost impossible; due to the cobblestones and sloping streets, small children may need to be carried. Visitors with small children particularly emphasize this issue.

A part of the village is still in ruins and dilapidated; restoration work is ongoing, but not all structures have been restored. If you adjust your expectations accordingly, you will enjoy your visit much more. In summer, it is recommended to bring plenty of water and wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes.

The history of Old Doğanbey, anciently known as Domatia, dates back to the 7th century BC. Inhabited by a Greek population for centuries, the village was evacuated with the Turkish-Greek population exchange in 1924. With the emigration of Greek residents to Greece, the village remained deserted for a long time; stone houses and church ruins stood as silent witnesses of this period.

In recent years, efforts to revive the village have begun to bear fruit. Some houses have been restored, small businesses have opened, and the village has started to attract visitors again. Nevertheless, many structures are still in ruins; this adds both a melancholic and authentic atmosphere to the village.
