Körteke Castle

Körteke Castle is not merely a medieval structure; it comprises the remains of Xyatis Ancient City, one of the important Leleg-type hill settlements of the Inner Caria region. These hill settlements, attributed to the Leleg people, reflect a settlement tradition on the western coasts of Anatolia dating back to before the 5th century BC. The complex at Körteke consists of an acropolis, an inner wall with three towers, two separate tower remains, and a cistern. An ancient King's Road route is also known to have passed near the castle.

Although the castle is among the registered cultural assets of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, its maintenance status is found insufficient by visitors; however, the historical texture and the view largely compensate for this deficiency.

The best times to visit Körteke Castle are during April-June and September-November. In July and August, the inland areas of Bozdoğan are quite hot; an uphill climb during this period can be tiring and risky. In winter, the roads can become muddy and slippery. In spring, the blooming slopes and clear weather make both the climb and the view most enjoyable.

To reach Körteke Castle, you first need to come to the Bozdoğan district from Aydın; this distance is approximately 70 km. The road from Bozdoğan to Körteke Neighborhood is unpaved. From the last point accessible by car, an approximately 30-minute mountain climb is required. Visitors report that the internet signal in the area is weak and navigation sometimes misdirects; therefore, it is recommended to download the route to an offline map beforehand or confirm with locals in Bozdoğan. The number of signs directing to the castle along the road is quite limited.

You can explore Bozdoğan town center and then head towards Körteke Castle. Before the climb, find a suitable area to park your car and take enough water and snacks with you. After visiting the castle ruins, take time to enjoy the panoramic view of the Bozdoğan plain. On your return, you can experience the local delicacies of Bozdoğan. Half a day will be sufficient for the entire route.

Physical condition: The climb is steep and challenging. Visitors emphasize that people who are not healthy and active should not attempt this route. Those with heart and joint problems should be careful.

Navigation: Internet signal is weak in the area, and road signs are insufficient. Save the route to an offline map.

Supplies: There are no facilities or sales points around the castle. Make sure to bring water, snacks, and sun protection with you.

Condition: The ruins are in a dilapidated state; stones and ground are uneven, so careful footing is required.

The most impressive photo angles of Körteke Castle are obtained from the highest point of the acropolis; from here, the Bozdoğan plain and surrounding mountains offer a wide panorama. The cornerstones of the Leleg walls and tower remains create frames that highlight the historical texture. At midday, when the sun hits from above, the texture of the stones becomes prominent; in the golden hour light, the plain view takes on a more dramatic character.

There are no food and drink options immediately near Körteke Castle. When you return to Bozdoğan town center, you can find the simple and nutritious flavors of Aegean cuisine in local restaurants. Olive oil dishes, fresh vegetable dishes, and local pastries are among the prominent options in this region.
