Trebenna Ancient City

The ideal times to visit Trebenna are spring and autumn. In the spring months, from March to May, the surroundings turn green, the weather remains cool, and hiking conditions are very pleasant. September-November offers similar advantages. In summer, compared to Antalya's scorching heat, the approximately 700-meter altitude provides a slight coolness, but the sun can be harsh during midday; it would be much wiser to set off early in the morning during this period. In winter, the roads can be muddy and slippery, so caution is required.

From Antalya city center, after passing in the direction of Konyaaltı, you can reach Çağlarca village by following the Geyikbayırı road. The total distance is approximately 32 km and takes 40-50 minutes by private car. Public transport options are quite limited; there is no regular service line operating to the region. Therefore, a rental car or a tour organization is the most reliable method. For those who want to hike, there is a trail starting from Geyikbayırı, gaining 300 meters in altitude over approximately 6 km; this route is considered challenging.

There are no restaurants or cafes immediately around Trebenna. The Geyikbayırı region, however, hosts various facilities located in nature, often preferred by Antalya residents for weekend getaways. Here you can find gözleme (Turkish flatbread), breakfast plates, and grilled options at small businesses. When planning your visit, we recommend bringing enough water and snacks; this preparation is especially important if you choose the hiking route.

Trebenna's strongest photographic opportunity is the silhouette of Sivridağ extending in the background of the ruins and the wide panorama opening towards the valley. In the morning hours, the combination of fog and light can create dramatic shots. The remains of the city walls, the surrounding steep cliffs, and the texture of old stonework also offer interesting material for detailed photography. If you choose the hiking trail, you can also capture the view extending to the Gulf of Antalya throughout the climb.

Trebenna is an archaeological site whose infrastructure is not fully organized. On-site information signs are extremely scarce, so doing some research beforehand or going with an experienced guide will make it easier to understand the ruins. Since the roads are dirt and stony, sturdy hiking shoes are essential. We recommend bringing plenty of water, sunscreen, and a light snack. Also, keep in mind that cell phone signal may be weak in the area.

For a day trip, you can consider the following route: Leave Antalya early in the morning, go to Geyikbayırı, start the trail there, and reach the Trebenna ruins on foot. After exploring the ruins, you can return to your vehicle via Çağlarca village; this way, you will have completed both the hiking and ancient city experience in one go. The Çağlarca-Trebenna-Çakırlar route is approximately 13 km in total and requires a full day. For a shorter visit, it is sufficient to go directly to Çağlarca by car and visit the ruins.

Trebenna is a border city established at the intersection of the Lycian, Pamphylian, and Pisidian regions. This geographical location led to the city being influenced by multiple cultures throughout history. The city bears traces from the Roman and Byzantine periods, with city walls, tomb structures, and various building remains visible. With limited academic excavation work, Trebenna retains its characteristic as a settlement not yet fully brought to light. Considering its proximity to Antalya, the existence of such a calm and unvisited ancient city so close to the city is truly surprising.
