Aperlai is a small Lycian port city founded at the beginning of a narrow and long bay on the Sıcak Peninsula, stretching between Kaş and Kekova. A member of the Lycian League, the city held an important position in the region's maritime trade in ancient times. The surviving city walls, rock tombs, cisterns, and building foundations clearly reveal the city's deep-rooted past. Its most striking feature is that a part of it was submerged due to collapses and rising sea levels in ancient times; this makes Aperlai one of the most interesting archaeological sites in the region, along with Kekova's sunken city.
There is no land route to reach the area; it is necessary to go by boat or sea vessel from Kaş or Üçağız. This difficulty of access keeps Aperlai in a calm and almost untouched location, away from crowded tourist groups. Ancient walls rising on the shores of turquoise waters and ruins extending into the sea create an extremely impressive atmosphere for both history enthusiasts and photography lovers. In winter, sea conditions can be rough, so boat trips may become irregular.
How to Get to Aperlai?
It is not possible to reach Aperlai by land. The most practical way is to go to the region by rented boat from Üçağız village or as part of a daily Kekova tour. Üçağız is approximately 25–30 km from Kaş and takes about 35–40 minutes by car from Kaş center. Boat tours are also organized directly from Kaş. Sıcak Pier is the closest departure point to the ancient city. Tour boats usually combine Kekova, Üçağız, and Aperlai on the same route.
Route Suggestion: Kekova Itinerary
Instead of visiting Aperlai alone, it would be much more efficient to plan a full-day tour combining it with the Kekova Sunken City, Üçağız village, and Simena Castle. You can depart from Üçağız or Kaş early in the morning, first anchor in Aperlai bay, then see the sunken ruins of Kekova, and then proceed to Simena. Having lunch at one of Üçağız's small restaurants offers a nice break. This itinerary allows you to see the most intense historical layers of the Lycian coast in a single day.
What to Eat, Where to Eat?
There are no food and beverage facilities in Aperlai itself. The nearby Üçağız village, however, is known for its small but delicious restaurants offering fish and seafood. The restaurants lined along the village's shore serve fresh fish, appetizers, and home-cooked meals to visitors returning from boat tours. Kaş has a wider gastronomic range; there are many alternatives from Turkish cuisine to international options. We recommend taking enough water and snacks with you before embarking on a boat tour.

Aperlai offers an extremely rich area for photography. Underwater ancient structural traces create a great impact, especially in shots taken with a polarizing filter when the water is calm in the morning. The ancient city walls at the entrance of the bay create a strong contrast when combined with the turquoise water. The rock tombs, with their geometric forms rising within the natural rock texture, offer interesting frames. If you plan to use a drone, you need to check the region's conservation status beforehand.
Things to Consider Before Visiting
Access to Aperlai is entirely dependent on sea conditions; on windy and wavy days, boats may not be able to enter the area. Making a boat reservation in advance is especially important in the summer months. Since there is no proper walking path in the ancient area, we recommend choosing sturdy, non-slip shoes. If you plan to snorkel, you need to bring your equipment with you or rent it from Kaş or Üçağız. Avoid touching the underwater structures; ancient ruins are delicate. There are no accommodation facilities around Aperlai. The closest options are in Kaş and Üçağız. Kaş is the most developed accommodation center in the region, with boutique hotels, guesthouses, and options for every budget. Üçağız is calmer; with small-scale guesthouses and home stays, it is a good choice for those seeking an authentic experience.
