Alara Han

The most suitable period to visit Alara Han is during April-May and September-October. During these months, the weather is quite favorable for long walks, and the crowds are relatively smaller. Since temperatures in the region can reach 35-40 degrees Celsius in July and August, choosing the early morning hours for summer visits will be both more enjoyable and safer. While the han can be visited in winter, the paths leading to Alara Castle may become slippery after rain.

The easiest way to reach Alara Han is by private car. After reaching Okurcalar town by following the D400 coastal road from Antalya, you just need to follow the signs for Çakallar Village. Those coming from Alanya use the same road in reverse; the distance is approximately 37 kilometers.

For those who prefer public transport, intercity minibuses departing from Alanya or Antalya stop in Okurcalar. To reach the han from Okurcalar, you can take a taxi or a motorcycle taxi. Some Alanya tours include Alara Han in their itineraries; you can ask your hotel reception about day trip options.

If you only want to visit Alara Han, 30-45 minutes is sufficient. However, if you plan to climb Alara Castle, which is right next to it, you should allocate at least 2-3 hours. Since the climb to the castle follows a steep path, comfortable shoes are essential. Also, leave extra time for a short break by the Alara River and to photograph the surroundings. Combining all these to create a half-day program would be a very logical choice.

You can include Alara Han in a day trip from Alanya or Antalya. The suggested order could be: Depart from Alanya early in the morning, visit Alara Han, then climb Alara Castle via the path right behind it. From the castle, enjoy the panoramic view of the Alara River valley. At lunchtime, return to Okurcalar or Alanya and take a break at a local restaurant. On the way back, stopping at Alanya Castle or Kızılkule would be a great option to complete the day in a historical atmosphere.

Alara Han offers several different shooting opportunities from a photographic perspective. The stone gate on the northeast facade of the han is one of the best details reflecting Seljuk craftsmanship; it is ideal for close-up shots. In shots taken from the banks of the Alara River, the han can be framed together with the rock mass and castle in the background; morning light falls particularly softly from this angle. When viewed from the top of Alara Castle, the valley around the han and the riverbed are visible from a bird's-eye view; it offers a perfect composition for wide-angle lenses. The approximately one-hour period before sunset brings out the texture of the stone structure in the most beautiful way.

If you are considering climbing Alara Castle, wearing sturdy, non-slip shoes is mandatory; the path is steep and rocky in places. In summer, the sun is very harsh, so make sure to bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen. Shaded areas around the han are quite limited. Climbing the castle with small children can be tiring; in this case, limiting the visit to just the han would be a safer choice. Since entrance fees and opening hours can vary by season, it is a good idea to confirm current information before the day of your visit.

There are no comprehensive food and drink options immediately around Alara Han. There are a few small restaurants and breakfast places in Okurcalar town and along the D400 highway. When you return to Alanya city center, the options become abundant: you can find fresh fish and seafood in restaurants around Alanya's harbor, and classic Turkish cuisine delights like döner, pide, and kebap in restaurants within the bazaar. If you plan a long walk, don't forget to bring snacks and enough water.

Alara Han was built in 1231 by Sultan I. Alaeddin Keykubad during one of the most powerful periods of the Anatolian Seljuk State. Functioning as the first major stop on the old Alanya-Konya caravan route, the han was designed to allow merchants and caravans to stay safely. The approximately 2,000 square meter structure, built with large cut stones, has a simple and functional plan reflecting the architectural understanding of the period. The Seljuks built similar caravanserais along the Silk Road, both promoting trade and consolidating their political authority. Alara Han forms one of the important links in this strategic network on the Mediterranean coast.
