This two-day itinerary in Tekirdağ offers a historical journey starting from the city's central fabric and extending to ancient times. It then descends into the heart of nature with the peaceful coves of the Marmara Sea and the impressive views of the Ganos Mountains. It's an ideal travel plan for those who want to explore historical heritage and spend time intertwined with nature.
A two-day itinerary in Tekirdağ brings together both the city's history and its natural beauty. The first day begins with Ottoman artifacts and ancient ruins in the Süleymanpaşa center, while the second day continues with coves overlooking the Marmara Sea and mountain views. This eight-stop trip will show you the different faces of Thrace.
Rüstem Pasha Bedesten
In the heart of Tekirdağ, this six-domed structure from the 16th century is an important legacy left by Mimar Sinan to the city. Built in the name of Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha, this bedesten was once the city's trade center. While exploring the structure, which stands out with its stone and brick workmanship, you can feel the rhythm of Ottoman trade life of that period. About an hour and a half should be enough here.
Namık Kemal Statue
In Namık Kemal Park, a short walk from Rüstem Pasha Bedesten, you will see the monumental statue of the "Poet of the Homeland," Namık Kemal. This marble work, made in 1949 in memory of the Tekirdağ-born poet, bears the signature of sculptor Nusret Suman. In the peaceful atmosphere of the park, you can examine the details of the statue and also visit the Namık Kemal House right next to it. A half-hour stop here is sufficient.
Tekirdağ Historical Governorship Building
Right near the Namık Kemal Statue, the city's historical governorship building rises. Designed by architect Kazım Tahsin in 1927, this building holds special importance as the place where Atatürk first announced the Alphabet Reform to the public on August 23, 1928. You can allocate about an hour to understand the building's exterior architecture and historical significance.
Heraion Teikhos Ancient City
Slightly east of Tekirdağ city center, near the Çitlembik Stream, lies the Ancient City of Heraion Teikhos, bearing the deep traces of Thracian civilization. Excavations are still ongoing in this area, also known as 'Hera's City'. Many artifacts such as main goddess statues, tumuli, and ancient medical findings have been unearthed. You can plan an hour and a half visit to wander among the ruins of the ancient city and delve into the depths of history.
Dut Limanı Bay
Start your second day with the natural beauties of Tekirdağ. Dut Limanı Bay is a quiet paradise you will encounter when heading from Süleymanpaşa's Kumbağ District towards Uçmakdere. With its rocky coast and lush green slopes, this peaceful bay is a getaway from the crowds. Since the road is a bit unpaved, it might be more comfortable to come with a high-chassis vehicle. Here you can fish or just enjoy the fresh air. I recommend allocating about an hour and a half.
Naip Castle
Located close to Dut Limanı Bay, on a forested hill southwest of Naip District, are the ruins of Naip Castle. This defensive structure from the Late Roman period was also used during the Byzantine era. The standing bastions of the castle reach a height of 6-7 meters, offering a wide view of the surroundings. You can spend about an hour here, exploring history and enjoying nature.
Kartaltepe Nature Park
In the afternoon, ascend to Kartaltepe Nature Park at the foothills of the Ganos Mountains. This vast area of 254 hectares offers panoramic views of the Marmara Sea. You can have a picnic, explore hiking trails, or watch paragliders. This is an excellent spot, especially for sunset. I recommend allocating at least an hour and a half at Kartaltepe.
Uçmakdere
The last stop of the day is Uçmakdere, an old Greek village established at the foothills of Ganos Mountain. Known for activities such as paragliding, camping, and nature walks, this village will enchant you with its calm atmosphere. The bay and wooden pier views are ideal for taking photos. You can wander through the narrow streets of the village, try local delicacies, and end the day peacefully. Allocating an hour and a half for Uçmakdere would be good.
For this two-day itinerary in Tekirdağ, it will be more comfortable to have your own vehicle for transportation, as public transport to some natural areas is limited. Be sure to try Tekirdağ meatballs for food. Restaurants in the city center are quite assertive in this regard.
