Discover a comprehensive 3-day travel itinerary in Balıkesir. Explore the historical structures on Cunda Island in Ayvalık, the natural beauties of Kazdağları, the ancient cities and national parks of Edremit and Bandırma. This route is ideal for couples who love both cultural heritage and nature.
Balıkesir, at the intersection of the Aegean and Marmara regions, is a city that offers something to every traveler with its geographical richness. On this three-day route, I have created a full travel plan extending from the stone streets of Ayvalık to the cool forests of Kazdağları, from the ancient ruins of Erdek to the coastal breeze of Bandırma. This route is especially ideal for couples who want to enjoy both the sea and history during the summer months.
Cunda Taksiyarhis Rahmi M. Koç Museum
Located in the heart of Cunda Island, within a restored church, this museum reflects the island's cultural heritage. Different collections, from tin toys to nautical instruments, create an interesting atmosphere when combined with the church's original architecture. Let this be your first stop when you set foot on Cunda.
Cunda Despot House
In the center of Cunda, Despot House, serving as a boutique hotel in a Greek mansion dating back to 1862, has been restored while preserving the island's stone architecture and high ceilings. You can visit here to feel the historical texture.
Hamidiye Mosque
Our next stop in Cunda is the Hamidiye Mosque, built during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II. This structure, notable for its red cut-stone facade and eclectic architecture, is an important religious heritage reflecting the island's multicultural past.
Stone Monastery / Tımarhane Island
On Tımarhane Island, near Ayvalık, at the foothills of Şeytan Sofrası, the ruins of Aya Paraskevi Monastery stand with their arched windows. This place offers a peaceful discovery accompanied by the view of Çamlık Bay.
Our second day's route continues from Ayvalık towards the Gulf of Edremit. In this region where nature and history intertwine, you will both meet cool waters and walk among ancient ruins.
Mıhlı Stream and Başdeğirmen Waterfall
Mıhlı Stream, flowing on the southern slopes of Kaz Dağları, offers peace to those seeking a nature escape with its cool water and a Roman-era stone bridge. In this valley near Altınoluk, you must see Başdeğirmen Waterfall within the forest.
Antandros Ancient City
Located on Kaletaşı Hill, overlooking the Gulf of Edremit, Antandros was one of the strategic cities of Troas. Mosaic Roman villa floors and ancient fountain ruins are interesting for history enthusiasts. In this area, where excavation works continue, you can travel back in time accompanied by the view of the Edremit Gulf.
Kazdağı National Park
Kazdağı National Park, known as the oxygen tank of the Northern Aegean, is located at the foothills of Mount Ida, which was the subject of Homeric epics. You can watch the view from the Şahindere Canyon Glass Observation Terrace, cool off in Hasanboğuldu Pond, and hike on lush forest paths.
Kurşunlu Mosque (Hekimzade Yusuf Sinan Mosque)
The oldest mosque in Edremit, Kurşunlu Mosque, dates back to 1299-1301. Its hedgehog eaves and carved column capitals, bearing traces of Seljuk period architecture, make this small stone structure special.
On the third day, we will head towards the Marmara coast to discover the historical and natural beauties of Erdek and Bandırma. This route, extending from ancient cities to national parks, showcases the diversity of Balıkesir.
Kyzikos Ancient City
Located in the Erdek district, at the point where the Kapıdağ Peninsula connects to the mainland, Kyzikos is an ancient city that hosted one of the largest temples in Anatolia. Although excavation works are ongoing, its column carvings and historical texture make it worth visiting.
Kapıdağ Peninsula
The Kapıdağ Peninsula, right next to Kyzikos, is a unique tombolo structure connected to the mainland by an isthmus. It is ideal for nature lovers with its natural coves, quiet villages, and hiking trails. You can explore it accompanied by the view of the Marmara Islands.
Kirazlı Monastery
Hidden in the forested depths of the Kapıdağ Peninsula, Kirazlı Monastery is a historical structure built by the Greeks in the 19th century. Its ruined stone walls and the dense forest surrounding it add a mystical atmosphere to the place.
Haydar Çavuş Mosque
Located on the Bandırma coastline, Haydar Çavuş Mosque was built at the beginning of the 19th century and rebuilt in a neo-classical style with the designs of Architect Kemalettin Bey after the 1873 fire. It is a peaceful stop with its large garden and old plane trees.
Manyas Bird Paradise (Kuşcenneti National Park)
Manyas Bird Paradise is a natural wonder where more than half of Turkey's bird species can be observed. In this national park, located on the northeastern shore of Lake Manyas, you can watch birds from the observation tower and visit the nature museum.
Although Balıkesir offers different beauties in every season, it is a great option to experience sea, history, and nature together in the summer months. While completing the route, don't forget to eat the famous toast in Ayvalık or taste seafood in Bandırma. For urban transportation, you can consider public transport or car rental options. Remember, it would be good to check the current opening hours and entrance fees for some places before you go.
