A Day Full of Historical and Natural Beauties in Adıyaman

A day in Adıyaman will be filled with unforgettable moments where history and nature intertwine. On this route, you will visit five important stops, tracing the footsteps of ancient civilizations from the Roman period to the Commagene Kingdom.

Cendere Bridge

Start your day with the Cendere Bridge in the Kahta district of Adıyaman. Built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Septimius Severus, this single-arched bridge still stands after approximately 1800 years. The Latin inscription on the bridge and the view of the Cendere Stream canyon demonstrate how impressive Roman engineering was. You can spend about 1.5 hours here to examine the surroundings and the bridge in detail.

Seljuk Bridge

You can also add the Seljuk Bridge, rising over the Kahta Stream right near the Cendere Bridge, to your itinerary. This pointed-arch structure made of flat cut stone reflects the architectural features of the Anatolian Seljuk period. The historical silhouette it forms with Yenikale and the natural landscape of the river valley make it a beautiful stop for photography. A visit of about 1.5 hours will be sufficient for this bridge as well.

Arsameia Ancient City

The next stop is Arsameia, the summer capital of the Commagene Kingdom. In this ancient city, located on the route to Mount Nemrut, you will see Anatolia's longest Greek inscription and a 158-meter-deep tunnel. Allocate 1.5 hours here to immerse yourself in history with rock reliefs and views of the Old Kahta Castle. Admission is free, so you can explore at your leisure.

Yeni Kale (Kahta Castle)

Opposite Arsameia, climb up to Yeni Kale (Kahta Castle), which rises on a high hill overlooking the Kahta Stream. This castle, with a deep history stretching from the Hittites to the Mamluks, offers a multi-layered history with its walls and watchtowers. Enjoying the panoramic view of the Kahta Stream from the castle is delightful. 1.5 hours should be enough for your visit.

Nemrut Ancient Site

End your day at the Nemrut Ancient Site. At this UNESCO World Heritage site, located at an altitude of 2,134 meters, you will see colossal statues of gods and kings built by Commagene King Antiochus I. Especially the play of light during sunset, along with the statues, will offer you a unique experience. Reaching Nemrut may take some time, so allocate at least 1.5 hours here and don't forget to check the weather. Admission is charged.
