Perre Ancient City

Perre, as one of the four main cities of the Commagene Kingdom, played an important role in the political and cultural life of the region in ancient times. This archaeological site, which today remains within the borders of Pirin Village in Adıyaman, maintained its vitality during the Roman period; however, after the Byzantine period, it gradually lost its importance. The city's name is mentioned as Perre in ancient sources and continues to be known as Pirin among the local people. Although Nemrut Mountain's international fame has sometimes overshadowed Adıyaman's other historical riches, Perre always holds a special place on the route of conscious travelers.

The most suitable times to visit Perre Ancient City are the spring and autumn months. In spring, from March to May, the surroundings turn green, and temperatures are ideal for walking. In September and October, temperatures begin to drop, and the area becomes quieter. In summer, walking around at midday under the harsh sun of Southeastern Anatolia can be tiring; if you choose this season, opting for early morning or late afternoon will offer a much more pleasant experience. In winter, cold and rainy weather conditions can sometimes make the rocky surfaces slippery.

Perre is an extremely inspiring place for photography enthusiasts. The entrances to the rock tombs, especially in the morning light, offer impressive shots in terms of depth and texture. Frame compositions obtained by looking out from inside the tomb chambers allow you to produce photos often seen on social media. Cisterns and carved surfaces also create striking shadow plays at different light angles throughout the day. The view from the high points of the area extending to the surrounding valley and the Adıyaman plain is perfect for wide-angle lens use. Photography is permitted.

Perre Ancient City is located only 5 kilometers from Adıyaman city center and can be easily reached via the Adıyaman–Malatya highway. The journey by private car takes approximately 10 minutes, is quite flat, and there are directional signs. For those preferring public transport, minibus lines departing from the city center operate towards Pirin Village; it is recommended to get information from Adıyaman bus station for current schedules. For arrival in Adıyaman, bus connections are available from major cities in Turkey; the nearest airport is Adıyaman Airport.

You can combine Perre with other historical sites in Adıyaman for a full day. Starting at Perre Ancient City in the early morning allows you to take advantage of the cool weather and explore the area before the crowds. In the afternoon, you can visit the Adıyaman Museum to examine the archaeological artifacts found in the region up close. If you plan to go to Mount Nemrut, you need to plan in advance to watch the sunset or sunrise; while it is possible to fit Perre and Nemrut into the same day, it can be tiring. If you have enough time, a two-day program offers a more enjoyable experience.

Dining options immediately around Perre Ancient City are quite limited; therefore, those planning a long visit are advised to bring water and light snacks. For the real gastronomy experience, it is necessary to return to Adıyaman city center. Adıyaman cuisine follows a line rich in Southeastern Anatolian flavors: çiğ köfte, katmer, beyran soup, and various types of kebabs are among the prominent tastes of the region. It is also possible to find home-cooked meals in local restaurants in the city center.

Since Perre Ancient City is an archaeological site, entry to some areas may be restricted; paying attention to signs and not going beyond designated boundaries is important for both your safety and the preservation of the site. Since you will be walking on rocky surfaces, wearing sturdy, non-slip shoes is highly recommended. In summer, sunscreen and plenty of water should be with you.
