Manyas Bird Paradise (Kuşcenneti National Park)

Although Kuşcenneti National Park welcomes visitors every month of the year, the periods of March-July and September-October are when the park truly lives up to its name. In spring, birds begin breeding; nests are built, chicks grow, and the lakeside transforms into a bird city. In autumn, the migration traffic of species heading south begins; the view from the observation tower during this period is truly impressive.

During winter months, visitor density decreases, and it becomes harder to see some species; however, for those who love tranquility, winter also has its unique beauty. Early morning hours are when birds are most active; if possible, try to visit the park between 08:00-10:00 AM.

The easiest access to the park is provided via Bandırma. From approximately the 16th kilometer of the Bandırma-Balıkesir highway, follow the sign turning west for another 2 kilometers to reach the park entrance. Since the distance from Bandırma is about 19 km, renting a car or taking a taxi is the most practical option.

For those who prefer public transport, there are regular minibus services from Balıkesir to Manyas district; from Manyas town center, an additional vehicle is needed to reach the park. For those coming from Istanbul or Bursa, the Bandırma ferry line is also a good alternative; it is quite easy to rent a car after disembarking in Bandırma.

The best photo spot in the park is undoubtedly the observation tower. From this tower, which offers a wide panorama of the lake, it is possible to capture pelicans and herons in flight, especially in the morning light. Carrying a long-focus lens will significantly improve your image quality.

You can also create close-up opportunities by waiting among the reeds along the walking path within the park. In the early morning, the misty lake surface and the birds gliding over it provide an ideal backdrop for impressive compositions. The golden hour, known as sunrise and sunset, is the most productive period for nature photographers.

Manyas and its surroundings offer the most authentic flavors of Balıkesir cuisine. Cheeses prepared with local medicinal herbs, especially Manyas white cheese, are among the region's most well-known gastronomic products. Small restaurants and cafes can be found near the park entrance and in Manyas town center.

If you plan to spend a long day, don't forget to bring snacks and water; supply points within the park may be limited. In Bandırma, a much wider selection of restaurants awaits you; fish restaurants are particularly worth trying.

Kuşcenneti National Park hosts a sensitive ecosystem, so visitors are expected to follow certain rules. Avoiding loud talking and sudden movements is important both to not scare the birds and to preserve the experience of other visitors. It is necessary to stay on the designated paths within the park.

Do not leave your trash in the park; plastic waste poses a serious threat to the wetland ecosystem. Flash photography is not recommended as it can negatively affect birds. If you bring binoculars, your observation experience will be much more enjoyable.

A visit of 2 to 4 hours is sufficient for most visitors to the park itself. Visiting the museum, spending time in the observation tower, and completing the walking path fit within this time. If you are more passionate about birdwatching, you can stay from morning until evening.

If you also include Manyas and Bandırma in your program, planning a full day or an overnight stay for the region would be more productive. Staying in Bandırma and arriving at the park early in the morning will allow you to catch the best observation conditions.

For those who want to fully explore the region, the suggested route can be structured as follows: Arrive in Bandırma in the evening and after an overnight stay, go to Kuşcenneti National Park early in the morning. After visiting the museum, go up to the observation tower and complete the walking path.

In the afternoon, you can go to Manyas town center to browse local cheeses and products. If you wish to stop by Gönen on your way back, its thermal springs would also be a nice complementary stop. This route allows you to experience both nature and local culture together.
