Kazdağları National Park

The most enjoyable period to visit Kazdağları National Park is between late April and early October. In spring, with the melting of the snow, streams and waterfalls become vibrant, and the forests turn a fresh green; this period offers a feast for photography enthusiasts.

While the coasts of the Edremit Gulf reach sweltering temperatures in summer, the park remains cool and fresh; therefore, hiking in the mountains during July-August is quite comfortable. Autumn, with its leaves turning yellow, orange, and red, transforms the park into a completely different atmosphere; October is especially popular among photographers seeking vibrant colors.

Although the park is open in winter, it is not preferred by anyone other than experienced mountaineers due to snow-covered roads and closed facilities. Picnic areas can get crowded on weekends and national holidays; it would be wiser to prefer weekdays for a quieter visit.

The most practical way to reach the park is by private car; because the distances between points within the park are quite extensive to cover by public transport. If you are coming from Izmir, you can reach Edremit in approximately 3 hours via the D550 highway. The same route applies to those coming from Çanakkale.

If you prefer public transport, there are dolmuş and minibuses operating from Edremit or Burhaniye bus terminals to Altınoluk and surrounding villages. The Yalama Entrance Control Point is located approximately 2 km inland from the Edremit-Altınoluk highway. Besides this, it is also possible to reach the park boundaries from the direction of Zeytinli and Güre.

If you are planning a one-day visit, we recommend starting with the Şahindere Canyon Glass Observation Deck. This terrace, overlooking the depths of the canyon, is one of the most impressive viewpoints in the park, and the view of the forest under the mist in the early morning is breathtaking.

Afterward, you can proceed to Hasanboğuldu Pond. This pond, also interesting for its legend, is ideal for a picnic and a short walk. In the afternoon, a climb to Sarıkız Tomb offers both a cultural and panoramic experience; the view around the tomb captures the gulf and mountains in the same frame.

If you are planning a two or three-day program, also include Adatepe Village and Yeşilyurt Village in your itinerary. These villages offer unique opportunities to observe traditional Aegean architecture and local life up close. Zeus Altar is also a must-see stop for mythology enthusiasts.

Kazdağları National Park offers a different photography experience in every season. The Şahindere Canyon Glass Observation Deck is an ideal location for mystical shots where mist and forest intertwine, especially in the early morning hours. The view into the depths of the canyon in the golden hour light produces memorable photographs.

For reflection photos around Hasanboğuldu Pond, morning hours should be preferred; in windless weather, the reflection of the forest on the mirror-like surface of the pond is quite impressive. Sarıkız Tomb, on the other hand, offers a perfect vantage point for those who want to capture the gulf and mountain silhouette in the same frame.

During autumn, the hiking trails among the beech and black pine forests look like a painting with their color transitions. For macro photography, the mosses, mushrooms, and flowers on the humid forest floor of the park offer a rich range of subjects.

There are restaurants and small facilities within the park; however, some of these facilities may be closed during the off-season. If your visit coincides with the off-season, it is recommended to bring enough food and drinks with you.

In the villages of Adatepe and Yeşilyurt at the foothills of the park, there are small restaurants and breakfast houses offering local delicacies. Olive oil appetizers, fresh herbs, and Aegean-style breakfast reflect the taste of this region. In the districts of Edremit and Altınoluk, you can find a wider range of dining options; these towns, famous for their gulf fishermen and olive oil products, are gastronomic stops that complete your trip.

If you plan to have a picnic, the organized picnic areas within the park are quite convenient; basic equipment such as grills and tables-benches are available.

Hiking trails within the park can be steep and slippery at some points; sturdy hiking shoes should definitely be preferred. Especially in spring and autumn, as weather conditions can change rapidly, it would be wise to bring a light raincoat.

If you plan to camp, you must obtain permission from the park management in advance and use the designated camping areas. Adhering to park rules regarding lighting fires is of great importance for both your safety and the protection of the forest. Taking your trash with you and not harming nature is essential for the sustainability of the park.

During peak seasons, especially on weekends, vehicle queues may form at park entrances; setting off in the early morning will prevent both queues and crowds. Considering that cell phone signal may be weak within the park, it is recommended to download important maps and information in advance.

There are organized camping areas within the park; these areas are an ideal option for those seeking an accommodation experience intertwined with nature. Camping fees vary according to the number of people and the equipment used; it is advisable to contact the park management for current information.

In the villages of Adatepe, Yeşilyurt, and Zeytinli, located right at the foothills of the park, there are boutique guesthouses and village houses. These accommodations, built with traditional Aegean architecture, offer both a comfortable and authentic atmosphere. In Altınoluk and Edremit, there are wider hotel and apartment options; these districts are an ideal base for those who want to combine a coastal holiday with a mountain trip.
