Eymir Lake

The most enjoyable time to visit Eymir Lake is spring and autumn. In April-May, the lake surroundings turn green, the weather is mild, and the diversity of bird species reaches its peak. In September-October, with the changing colors of the leaves, it becomes a paradise for photography.

During the summer months, Ankara's heat is also felt around the lake; choosing early morning hours during this period offers a cooler and calmer experience. The number of visitors decreases in winter; however, the appearance of the lake on a foggy winter morning creates a completely different atmosphere. Weekdays are always calmer, making them preferable for those who want to avoid crowds.

Eymir Lake, located approximately 20 kilometers from the city center, can be reached in several ways. EGO line 190 departs from Opera and stops at Eymir Yolu; this line is the most practical option for those coming by public transport. It is known that there is also a service from Ulus once an hour; however, we recommend confirming current schedules from EGO's official channels before your journey.

From Gölkonakları, the nearest stop, the entrance point can be reached in about an 8-minute walk. Those coming by private car can follow the METU campus road; however, since an annual vehicle entry card is mandatory for vehicle entry, this card must be obtained in advance from the METU Revolving Fund Enterprise. It is also possible to reach by taxi; it is recommended to inquire about the distance and fare before your journey.

Eymir Lake, with its natural structure, offers views worth photographing at every corner. The light hitting the lake's surface at sunrise creates unique reflections; if fog accompanies at these hours, the shot almost creates itself. The lake shores framed by yellow and orange leaves in autumn are also quite impressive.

The hours when rowers do their morning training offer interesting photo opportunities in terms of both movement and scenery. Bird watching spots are perfect for nature photographers with long lenses; this area, where more than 160 bird species have been recorded, yields the most productive results in the early morning hours. The narrow and long structure of the lake is also suitable for panoramic shots with wide-angle lenses.

There are cafes and restaurants serving visitors around Eymir Lake. Drinking tea by the lake and relaxing with the view is one of the most enjoyable moments of the visit. In some places, gazebos and wooden seating areas are also available.

Since pike, carp, and tench can be caught in the lake, it is also a special attraction for fish lovers. Although there are suitable areas for picnicking, barbecuing and making fires are strictly prohibited; adhering to this rule is of great importance for the peace of both nature and other visitors. It is recommended to bring snacks and water with you, especially for long walking tours.

Since Eymir Lake is located within the METU campus, certain rules must be followed. Pedestrian entry is possible between 06:00 and 22:00; entry is not permitted outside these hours. We would like to remind you that an annual card is required for vehicle entry and that this card is obtained from the METU Revolving Fund Enterprise.

Barbecuing and making fires are prohibited; violation of this rule harms nature and can lead to sanctions. Not leaving litter around the lake and protecting wildlife is the shared responsibility of visitors. The trail is very suitable for cyclists; however, caution should be exercised towards pedestrians on busy weekends. It is recommended to confirm current rules regarding visiting with dogs from METU.

Eymir Lake is an attractive destination not for a single activity but for many different interests. The approximately 11 km circumference of the lake is very suitable for walking and running in terms of terrain; the soft dirt path prevents the asphalt fatigue on the knees. The same route offers an enjoyable tour for cycling enthusiasts.

Eymir, one of Ankara's richest spots for bird watching, has recorded more than 160 bird species. Watching the rowing and sailing training of the METU Sports Club is also a unique experience. There is also an opportunity to take a boat trip on the lake. Shady areas are also very suitable for those who want to set up a hammock, read a book, or simply sit by the lake and relax.
