Kurtkulağı Caravanserai

Kurtkulağı Caravanserai is an important link in the trade network established by the Ottoman Empire between Anatolia and the Middle East. Located on the Old Aleppo Caravan Route, the structure was designed as a posthouse where merchants and state officials stayed, and animals rested. The inscription found in the Adana Museum documents that the work was built by Hüseyin Pasha in 1659. Although some sources mention different years for its construction, the original inscription in the museum is considered the most reliable source.

During the Ottoman period, the caravanserai was not only an accommodation facility but also served as a center for communication and trade in the region. With this feature, Kurtkulağı goes beyond a mere inn structure, containing important clues about the social and economic life of its era.

Çukurova is one of the hottest regions in Turkey. In summer, temperatures can reach 35-40 degrees Celsius, and humidity levels are quite high. Therefore, the period between October and April is much more comfortable for a visit. In March and April, the plain takes on a lush green appearance, offering an extra beauty for those who want to photograph the caravanserai.

Since the structure is open every day of the week, it doesn't matter if it's a weekend or a weekday; however, going in the early morning allows you to catch both the light and the quiet. School trip groups sometimes visit here, so early mornings are ideal if you want a calm experience.

The most practical way to reach Kurtkulağı Caravanserai is by private vehicle. From Adana city center, follow the D.400 Adana-Osmaniye highway eastward. After crossing the Misis bridge, follow the signs to Kurtkulağı Village at the Çakaldere location. The total distance is approximately 50-55 km, and road conditions are generally good.

It is also possible to reach from Ceyhan district center; you can take a taxi from Ceyhan to the village, which is located approximately 12 km southeast of Ceyhan. There are regular bus services from Adana to Ceyhan, but for the section after Ceyhan, you will need to opt for a taxi or a rental car. Searching for Kurtkulağı Caravanserai on navigation apps will direct you straight to the structure.

Kurtkulağı Caravanserai is an unexpected discovery spot for photography enthusiasts. The structure's stone walls and arched openings create dramatic shadow plays, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. It is possible to frame the entire structure with a wide-angle lens; the flat silhouette of the Çukurova plain adds an impressive depth as a background.

Looking from the inner courtyard of the structure, the stone arches meeting the sky also offer inspiring compositions for black-and-white photography. In spring, the surrounding greenery and wild flowers add a distinct color to the structure. It is recommended to check relevant regulations beforehand for drone usage.

Since the caravanserai is located in a rural area, there are no cafes, restaurants, or markets nearby. It is important to bring enough water and snacks with you. As the ground of the structure consists of uneven stones and soil, choose comfortable walking shoes; high heels or sandals are not suitable.

Since the structure is undergoing restoration and being brought into tourism, access to some sections may be restricted from time to time. The visit is completely free, and there is no official entrance point or ticket booth. To avoid damaging the historical structure, writing on walls and dislodging stones should be avoided.

While visiting Kurtkulağı Caravanserai, you can combine it with other historical sites in and around Ceyhan for a full day. Start early in the morning at the caravanserai; then proceed to Anavarza Ancient City. In the afternoon, on your way back to Adana, you can stop at Misis (Mopsuhestia) Ancient City and its bridge.

If you want to add Adana city center to your itinerary, you can see iconic structures of Adana such as Taşköprü and Ulu Cami on your return in the evening. This route allows you to experience the layered history of Çukurova, spanning thousands of years, in a single day.

There are no food and drink establishments immediately around the caravanserai. Before or after your visit, you can try the flavors of Adana cuisine at local restaurants in Ceyhan district center. Ceyhan hosts town restaurants that offer local delicacies such as Adana kebab and turnip juice at affordable prices.

For a broader gastronomic experience, returning to Adana city center is the best option. Adana kebab, içli köfte (stuffed meatballs), şırdan (stuffed lamb tripe), and freshly squeezed turnip juice are among the indispensable flavors of Adana cuisine. Especially the well-established kebab restaurants around Seyhan and Kayapınar stand out as the best addresses reflecting the city's taste.
