Aigeai Ancient City

The most suitable periods to visit Aigeai Ancient City are April–May and September–October. During these periods, the harshness of the Mediterranean climate softens; you won't have to contend with scorching heat or cold winds. Walking among the ruins and exploring the tower and castle walls becomes much more enjoyable in these seasons.

For those planning a visit in the summer months, early mornings, i.e., between 08:00–10:00, are the best option. Although the sea breeze in the afternoon provides some coolness, staying in the open area for a long time can be tiring. In winter, the region becomes deserted; walking on the rocky ground in rainy weather requires caution.

Aigeai Ancient City is located approximately 81 km from Adana city center, within the borders of Yumurtalık district. The route passing through Ceyhan and Yakapınar is both comfortable and scenic. It is only 30 km from Ceyhan district center.

If you are going by your own car, it is sufficient to follow the Adana–Ceyhan–Yumurtalık road; the road quality is generally good. Those preferring public transport can take Yumurtalık minibuses from Adana bus station; after getting off in the district center, it is possible to reach the ancient city on foot or by taxi. Car rental options in Yumurtalık are quite limited, so it is more practical to leave Adana with a car.

Upon entering the city, we recommend first examining the Ayas Port Castle; from its walls, you can see both the sea and the ancient city's texture together. Then, proceed along the coast to visit the Sea Castle and Süleyman Tower. These structures are not far from each other, and the walk between them is quite enjoyable.

After exploring the castle area, head towards the inner parts; here, you will encounter remains of the colonnaded street and traces of baths. As the last stop on the route, the rock tombs and sarcophagi located in the rocky parts of the peninsula can be visited. Completing this entire route at a relaxed pace takes approximately 2–3 hours; for those who want to take photos, this time can easily extend.

Aigeai is practically an open-air studio for photography enthusiasts. Shots framing the Gulf of Iskenderun from the walls of Ayas Port Castle look extremely impressive, especially in the morning light. A wide-angle lens is a great advantage for capturing the texture of the castle stones and the blue of the sea in the same frame.

Süleyman Tower, with its dramatic silhouette and proximity to the sea, is an ideal location for golden hour photography. In the section where the rock tombs are located, macro and detail shots highlighting ancient stonework can be taken. The remains of the colonnaded street provide a good background for perspective plays; especially at midday, the shadows of the columns falling on the ground create interesting compositions.

Since Yumurtalık is a fishing town on the Mediterranean coast, fresh seafood is the highlight of the tables here. In the small restaurants and fish eateries in the district center, you can try the day's catch, shrimp, and mussel dishes. Fresh fish varieties, varying by season, are served with simple cooking methods.

Adana kebab, an indispensable part of Adana cuisine, can also be easily found in the region. After visiting the ancient city, you can complete the day nicely by taking a Turkish coffee or tea break at small cafes in Yumurtalık center. It is recommended to bring plenty of water and light snacks with you before your visit; there may not be sales points within the ancient city.

Aigeai Ancient City is located on a rocky and rugged peninsula. Therefore, wearing comfortable walking shoes is of great importance for both safety and comfort. High heels or flat sandals can make it very difficult to walk on this terrain.

In summer months, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water should be with you for sun protection. Shaded areas are limited as the area is quite large. If you are coming with small children, caution should be exercised at high points such as castle walls and rocky edges. Since WC facilities may be limited in the ancient city area, it is advisable to take care of this need in Yumurtalık center.

Aigeai Ancient City can easily be explored with a half-day visit. For those who want to simply wander through the ruins and viewpoints, 2 hours may be sufficient, while visitors who carefully examine each structure and take many photos can spend up to 3–4 hours.

It is quite logical to plan it as a day trip from Adana. If you set off early in the morning, after visiting Aigeai, you can have lunch on Yumurtalık beach on the same day and return to Adana in the evening. If you plan to stay in the region for a few days, you can combine it with other ancient cities in the vicinity to create a more comprehensive historical tour.
