Altındere Valley National Park is located 48 km from Trabzon city center and 18 km from Maçka district center. Declared a national park in 1987, the area covers approximately 4,800 hectares and takes its name from the Altındere stream that flows through it. The most well-known aspect of the valley is that Sümela Monastery, built on a cliff edge, can be reached via a path from here. But the park is also a destination on its own: it has pine forests, small waterfalls, and picnic areas along the stream.
Most visitors combine their trip with a visit to Sümela. A common itinerary includes visiting the monastery in the morning and taking a short walk in the valley in the afternoon. Comments frequently mention the relaxing scenery and atmosphere, and the food service at the facilities is also well-liked. When to Visit?
Between May and September is when the valley is at its greenest. Mid-summer weekends, both the park and Sümela side get crowded, so if possible, choose a weekday. In winter months, snowfall can affect roads and paths. If you plan to go during this period, confirm current road conditions through Maçka District Governorship or forest management directorate channels.
How to Get There?
Minibus services from Trabzon center to Maçka run frequently. From Maçka, you can continue to the park and Sümela by local dolmuş or taxi. If you are going by your own car, follow the D885/E97 highway and exit at the Maçka sign; the road is marked until the park entrance.
How Much Time Should You Allocate?
2-3 hours are sufficient for just the valley and picnic area. If you also include a visit to Sümela Monastery, calculate between half a day and a full day, including the walk on the path and the monastery tour.
How to Plan Your Day?
Going up to Sümela Monastery early in the morning makes it easier to see the place before the crowds. Descending to the valley in the afternoon for a walk along Altındere, and ending the day with a break in Maçka center is a common sequence.

Points overlooking the valley from the path leading up to the monastery offer impressive shots, especially in the morning hours when the fog disperses. The small waterfalls along the Altındere are also preferred for close-up photographs.
