Şarky Kebir Mosque

The ideal time to visit is during spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). The climate in Şarky is mild during these seasons, making it much more enjoyable to explore the district on foot. In summer, coastal tourism makes the district lively, increasing traffic and crowds; however, it can still be visited. The area around the mosque gets busy during Friday prayer times. If you prefer a quiet visit, choose weekday afternoons.

To reach Şarky from Tekirda city center, you can take buses heading to Şarky from Tekirda Intercity Bus Terminal. The journey takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. It is also possible to reach Şarky by private car via the D-110 highway. Those coming from Istanbul can use the E-80 to Tekirda, then continue on the road to Şarky. Once you arrive at Şarky district center, you can reach the mosque on Çifteler Street in Camikebir Neighborhood by walking or a short taxi ride.

Şarky Kebir Mosque, as one of the oldest places of worship in the district, holds a firm place in the religious and cultural memory of the region. Reflecting the Ottoman building tradition, the mosque features striking wooden craftsmanship in its interior, in contrast to its simple exterior facade.

The most notable elements of the structure are the minbar and the railings of the women's section. Both are crafted using the wooden openwork technique, meaning they are carved and perforated to create lace-like motifs. This type of wooden craftsmanship was a frequently used method in Ottoman religious architecture; however, its application in each structure carries a unique quality.

The wooden openwork minbar inside the mosque is one of the most valuable details for photography enthusiasts. The carved motifs in the wood become much more distinct during hours when light filters through the windows. The railings in the women's section also display similar craftsmanship. From the outside, the mosque's appearance, integrated with Şarky's historic street texture, offers an interesting frame for street photography.

Şarky is one of Tekirda's districts known for its viticulture tradition. Fresh fish and seafood are among the main choices in the restaurants in the district center. Tekirda kftesi (meatballs) is the most famous local delicacy; you can try this flavor at the kfte restaurants in Şarky. Taking a tea break at the small artisan cafes around the mosque is also a nice option.

Kebir Mosque is an active place of worship; please be quiet and respectful during your visit. You are required to leave your shoes at the entrance when entering the mosque. Female visitors are expected to cover their heads; it would be practical to carry a scarf with you. Avoid visiting the interior during prayer times; prefer visiting between prayers. Confirm the mosque's opening hours from an official source before you go.

20-40 minutes is sufficient for Kebir Mosque. If you want to explore Şarky generally, including its historical texture, coastline, and surrounding vineyard villages, planning between half a day and a full day would be more efficient.
