Güneşkaya Cave

The ideal period for Güneşkaya Cave and the surrounding valley is between April-June and September-October. During these months, the weather is neither too hot nor too cold; hiking trails and surrounding forests are at their most beautiful. While the inside of the cave remains cool in mid-summer, walking on sun-exposed paths can be tiring. In winter, keep in mind that the roads can become muddy.

Güneşkaya Cave is located approximately 2 kilometers from Tekirdağ's Saray district center, near Kavacık Neighborhood. The most practical way to reach the area is by private car. From Tekirdağ center to Saray, there is a distance of about 55-60 kilometers by road. Those coming from Istanbul can easily reach Saray via the TEM highway; the district is quite close to Istanbul. While it is possible to come to Saray by minibus or bus via public transport, a taxi or private vehicle is required for the last 2 kilometers to the cave.

Saray district offers more than one natural spot beyond Güneşkaya Cave. You can try the following route in a single day: Start with Kanara Canyon, pass through Laladere, then descend into Güneşkaya Valley. Walk any section of the approximately 20 kilometers of hiking trails in the valley, then visit the cave. You can complete the day with a picnic at Güneşkaya Picnic Area or Çamlıköy Nature Park. All these points are located close to each other within the borders of Saray district.

Before going to Güneşkaya Cave, keep a few practical points in mind. Signposts on the road to the cave can be insufficient; some visitors report taking the wrong route. Downloading the map beforehand and using it offline is a good precaution. Since the paths around the cave are rough and uneven, sturdy hiking shoes are essential. As the cave itself is not an official facility, there is no lighting inside; don't forget to bring a flashlight. Since there are no sales points or facilities in the area, stock up on water and snacks beforehand.

The natural stalactites and stalagmites inside Güneşkaya Cave create an interesting background for photos; however, due to insufficient light inside, a wide aperture or flashlight support will make your job easier. The rock formations right in front of the cave entrance also offer striking shots. The forest and stream views along Güneşkaya Valley provide an attractive backdrop for photography, especially in the greenness of spring.

There are no food and beverage facilities in the cave area. There are small restaurants and cafes in Saray district center; you can eat in the district center before or after your cave visit. The most enjoyable option in the region is to have a picnic at Güneşkaya Picnic Area with the food you brought. For those who want to try Tekirdağ's famous meatballs and various local delicacies, established restaurants in Tekirdağ center or Saray are good addresses.

1-2 hours is enough just to see the cave. For those who want to include the hiking trails in Güneşkaya Valley and the surrounding picnic area in their program, it is more logical to allocate between half a day and a full day. When you add other natural spots in Saray district (Kanara Canyon, Laladere, Çamlıköy Nature Park), this turns into a full-day nature excursion program.
