Ayas Mehmet Pasha is one of the most colorful statesmen in Ottoman history. Born in Albania, he was raised in the Enderun through the devshirme system; he undertook important duties in the campaigns of Çaldıran, Egypt, and Dulkadiroğulları. Rising from Agha of the Janissaries to Beylerbey of Rumelia, and then to Vizier of the Dome, Ayas Pasha assumed the position of Grand Vizier after the execution of Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha in 1536. He remained in this position for over three years, dying in a plague epidemic in 1539 and being buried in Eyüpsultan.
