Çaltı Stream and Canyon

Spring and autumn are the most suitable periods, both for mild weather for hiking and for the greenery of the valley. In summer, the sun can hit directly into the canyon at noon, so choosing early morning or late afternoon provides a more comfortable walk. In winter, the region can be cold and access may become difficult. The most practical period for those who want to see the canyon is between April and October.

From Sivas city center, it takes approximately 3 hours to Divriği by private car; the road is mountainous and scenic. Alternatively, it is possible to get off at Divriği with the Doğu Ekspresi. In this case, the train journey itself becomes part of seeing the canyon, as the line passes along the edge of the valley. From Divriği, access to the canyon is a short distance by local taxi or your own vehicle.

Half a day is sufficient for the canyon itself. For those who have come all the way to Divriği and also want to see the Great Mosque and Hospital, a program with an overnight stay is more logical. Campers can stay one night by the canyon and see the railway line covered in mist in the morning.

Starting from Divriği center, visiting the Great Mosque and Hospital first, then moving to the canyon in the afternoon, is a logical sequence. Stopping at Kız Köprüsü (Maiden's Bridge) while progressing through the canyon completes the route; the bridge is a valuable stop both historically and for photography. Those with limited time can just go to the viewpoint and spend time in the area overlooking the valley and the railway.

The canyon is a dry valley, so you need to carry enough water with you. The paths are steep and rocky in some places; sturdy shoes are essential. If you plan to camp, you need to bring your own equipment, as there is no major infrastructure in the area. Cell phone reception can be weak in the depths of the valley, so it's advisable not to go alone.

The most striking shot is the moment when the railway line passes through the valley and the Doğu Ekspresi cuts through the canyon. The scenic parking area at the canyon entrance offers a view overlooking both the valley and the Stone Road. Çaltı Stream is the main water source that shaped the geography of Divriği; it has played a role in the development of the district both naturally and historically. The formation of the canyon was shaped by the stream eroding the rocks over the years, and the railway line in the region was also built following this valley. When considered together with Divriği's UNESCO-listed historical artifacts, the canyon is a stop that adds a natural dimension to the region.
