Altınkale Travertines

Altınkale has a different appearance in all four seasons. In winter, especially after snowfall, when the temperature drops below zero, the thermal water freezes the moment it touches the travertines; ice masses and rising steam can be seen in the same frame. December-February is the most suitable period for this view. In summer, the water warms up, and families with children especially spend time in the shallow pools formed. In spring and autumn, the area is also suitable for a quiet, uncrowded stroll.

Altınkale is located within the Sıcak Çermik Thermal Tourism Region, which is part of the Yıldızeli district, approximately 24-30 kilometers from Sivas city center. Going by your own car is the most comfortable option; the road is flat and easy. If you plan to use public transport, you need to research dolmuş or minibus services from Sivas bus station or city center to Sıcak Çermik in advance, as service frequency can be limited.

1-2 hours is sufficient to explore the travertines and take photos. However, if you are staying at one of the thermal hotels in the region or planning to use the spa facilities, it would be more appropriate to allocate half a day here. It is also possible to combine it with a city tour in Sivas on a single day, but you need to start early.

Visiting the historical structures in Sivas city center (such as Gök Medrese, Çifte Minareli Medrese) in the morning and then heading to Sıcak Çermik in the afternoon offers two different experiences in one day. If you are going in winter, visiting in the first hours after snowfall gives you the chance to see the ice formation in its freshest state. For families visiting in summer, going before noon is preferred for both fewer crowds and the water not being too hot yet.

The surface of the travertines can be wet and slippery, especially in icy parts during winter, so it's important to walk carefully. If you are with children, it's good to keep an eye on them in the shallow pool areas. Some visitors note that the general arrangement of the facilities could be better, so setting your expectations for a natural hot spring-travertine area helps prevent disappointment.

The most striking shots come in winter, when ice and steam are seen side by side; drone shots are also popular in the region. To see the yellow-golden travertine texture up close, you need to go down to the edge of the pools, and to see the entire area from a wide angle, you need to go up a bit higher. Near sunset, the light makes the travertine color more prominent.

Altınkale is a project implemented by the Sivas Governorship to utilize the thermal source in Sıcak Çermik. It was inspired by Pamukkale's travertine formation, but the source of the color here is different: thermal water with high sulfur and limonite content leaves a yellow-golden toned surface over time. Of the 40,000 square meter area, 21,000 square meters are travertines, and the rest is arranged as a recreation area. The surrounding thermal hotels and facilities also meet the accommodation needs of visitors.
