Taraklı 700-Year-Old Plane Tree

The plane tree can be visited all year round; however, spring and autumn are the most fruitful periods in terms of both climate and visual appeal. In spring, the surrounding nature comes alive, while in autumn, the tree's yellowing leaves create a different atmosphere. While the tree's wide shade is cooling in summer, Taraklı gets crowded on weekends and holidays. Winter visits are quieter; roads can sometimes be challenging.

Taraklı is approximately 60 km from Sakarya city center. Regular minibus and bus services from Sakarya provide transportation to Taraklı. For those arriving by private car, parking is available in the town center. The plane tree is located in Yusufbey Neighborhood; since it is close to the town center, you can also reach it on foot. To best capture the tree's massive trunk and sprawling canopy, you need to step back a few paces; a wide-angle lens or phone panorama mode works well. Gözleme and tea are sold at a local stall right next to the tree; visitors describe this short break as an enjoyable part of their visit. In Taraklı's historic bazaar, there are also shops selling local products such as homemade honey, noodles, and tarhana. Shopping from local small businesses is also meaningful in terms of sustaining regional tourism.

30–60 minutes is sufficient for the plane tree itself. Taraklı, with its historic Ottoman wooden houses, thermal springs, and hiking trails, can easily turn into a half-day or full-day trip. It can be planned as a day trip from Istanbul or Sakarya; for those wishing to stay overnight, there are boutique guesthouses in the district.

When you arrive in Taraklı, you can start by walking through the historic bazaar and among the Ottoman-era wooden houses. From there, proceed to the plane tree in Yusufbey Neighborhood; take a short break here. If available, you can complete your day by visiting one of the thermal spring facilities. The route is entirely walkable; thanks to the small scale of the district, you can easily manage everything.

Since the tree is surrounded by an iron fence, it is not possible to approach the trunk directly; you can use the gazebo area to benefit from the shade. Directional signs may be insufficient, so keeping your map application open will make your job easier. There is no definitive information about the potability of the spring water; it is safer to ask locally before drinking. The area gets crowded on weekends and holidays.
