Harmantepe Castle

The most suitable period to visit Harmantepe Castle is between May and October. In mid-summer, the thorny weeds and high temperatures in the surroundings make approaching the castle significantly difficult; visitor comments also indicate that the vegetation becomes almost impassable during this period. In early autumn, when the weeds dry and shorten, reaching the castle walls is relatively easier. In winter and early spring, dirt roads can become muddy due to rain; going by car during this season can be risky.

The castle is located near Harmantepe village in the Söğütlü district, which is part of Sakarya province. From Sakarya city center, Söğütlü can be reached by road in approximately 20-25 minutes. After passing from Söğütlü to Harmantepe village, follow the dirt field road leading to the castle. Since there is no regular public transport line in the region, going by private car is the most logical option. In rainy weather, the dirt road may become impassable for vehicles; consider the weather conditions before your visit.

Harmantepe Castle is a half-hour stop that does not require an extensive travel plan. 30-60 minutes is sufficient to examine the rampart walls from the outside, take photos, and look at the surroundings. There are no exhibitions, information boards, or organized areas inside the castle. A half-day itinerary can be created by combining it with other historical sites or natural areas in the Söğütlü district.

Before going to Harmantepe Castle, a few practical points need to be considered. The surroundings are completely unmaintained; the area around the rampart walls is covered with thorny weeds, and no cleaning or restoration work has been done. Visitors report that they sometimes had to turn back without being able to approach the castle due to thorns. It is strongly recommended to go with thick and long trousers and sturdy closed shoes. Since the castle is an unprotected open area, there are no security guards or guides; caution is required when visiting alone. There is also no infrastructure such as toilets, cafes, or resting areas in the region.

Harmantepe Castle is an interesting stop for photography among Sakarya's lesser-known historical structures. The 8-10 meter rampart walls built with local stones offer a strong texture and play of light and shadow, especially in the morning light. The best angle to reflect the elliptical form of the castle is obtained from the northern slope of the hill. The surrounding fields and natural vegetation, along with the walls, create an atmosphere of an abandoned medieval castle. Using a wide-angle lens provides an advantage for framing both the walls and the surroundings together.

Harmantepe Castle is a defensive structure built by the Byzantine Empire in the 12th or 13th century to secure its eastern border. It forms a link in the chain of castles that followed the western bank of the Sakarya River; this strategic positioning aimed to control river crossings. The structure was built with local stones on a rounded, elliptical plan. The thickness of the rampart walls varies between 2 meters, and their height is between 8 and 10 meters.
