Kastabala Ancient City is an ancient settlement located 12 km north of Osmaniye on the Ceyhan River, consisting of Roman-era colonnaded streets, a theater, baths, and church ruins; admission is free.
Kastabala, formerly known as Hierapolis, is located 12 kilometers north of Osmaniye city center, in a valley overlooking the plain between Kesmeburun and Bahçeköy. Its settlement history dates back to the Neolithic period, but most of the ruins visible today belong to the Roman era. The colonnaded street, theater, baths, and aqueducts built in the 2nd-3rd centuries are still standing. The city is associated with the cult of Artemis-Perasia, which is why Antiochus IV named the city Hierapolis, meaning "sacred city."
The colonnaded street is the main axis of the visit. This street, extending east-west on the northern slope, has rows of shops and galleries on both sides; it was repaired numerous times from the 2nd century to the 12th-13th centuries. Further along the street is the North Church, dating to the 5th century. This three-nave, basilica-plan structure was built entirely by reusing Roman-era architectural fragments. Traces of the castle are visible on the hill. Some scenes from the movie "The Girl with the Red Scarf" were filmed here, a detail still discussed among visitors.
Excavations have been ongoing since 2009, continuing under the leadership of Osmaniye Korkut Ata University since 2021. Most visitors highlight the tranquility and lesser-known status of the site. However, the height of the weeds on the walking path and the poor condition of the dirt road are frequently mentioned complaints. After rain, the last 1-kilometer dirt road becomes muddy, so choose your footwear accordingly.

A frequently mentioned point in visitor comments is that at certain times, the weeds on the walking path grow tall, which can make the visit difficult.
How to Get There?
Access from Osmaniye city center via the asphalt road towards Kesmeburun village is easy, taking approximately 20 minutes. Going by your own car is the most practical option. If you plan to use public transport, you can take village minibuses going towards Bahçe, Kesmeburun, or Karatepe, but service frequency might be limited. Since it is located on the way to the Karatepe-Aslantaş Open-Air Museum, combining the two sites on the same day makes for a logical itinerary.
How Much Time Should You Allocate?
Exploring the site takes 15-20 minutes for most visitors. If you walk along the colonnaded street, look at the North Church ruins, and then climb to the castle, the duration might extend a bit. Combining it with the Karatepe-Aslantaş Museum and allocating half a day is more efficient if you are specifically visiting the region.

Start from Osmaniye city center, visit Kastabala first, then continue to the Karatepe-Aslantaş Open-Air Museum, which is on the same road. The drive between the two stops is short, and the route already overlaps. If you have time, you can also add Toprakkale Castle to your itinerary on the way back.

There are no toilets or regular lighting on site, so it's more suitable to visit during daylight hours.
