Karatepe-Aslantaş National Park

Summer months are quite hot in the region. Many visitors state that the weather is tiring during midday. Spring and autumn are more comfortable for both visiting the open-air museum and picnicking by the lake. If you plan to go in the summer, prefer early morning hours; you will both avoid the heat and see the museum before it closes.

The park is approximately 30-33 km from Osmaniye city center and 20-22 km from Kadirli district. From Osmaniye, head towards Kadirli, turn left at Cevdetiye neighborhood, cross the Ceyhan River, and then just follow the park signs. The road is entirely asphalt, making access by private car easy. Public transportation options are limited, so going by your own car or renting a car is more practical.

Exploring the open-air museum takes 1-1.5 hours. If you add a picnic by the lake or a short walk, the total visit can extend to 3-5 hours. If you are considering camping, check in advance if the campsite is active during that period. Some visitors have stated that the campsite was closed when they went.

The stone reliefs and lion statues in the open-air museum are unique photo subjects. The points where Aslantaş Dam Lake leans against the forest ridge provide good images in the afternoon light. Shots taken from the gazebos by the lake capture the water and forest in the same frame.

The closing times of the museum and the recreation area differ; the museum usually closes earlier. It is a logical sequence to visit the museum first and then move to the picnic area. Mosquitoes can be intense, especially in the late afternoon and by the lake, so bring repellent if you are going with children. In summer, temperatures are high, so bring essentials like water and a hat.

Karatepe-Aslantaş is the site where the bilingual inscription, which led to the decipherment of Hittite hieroglyphs, was found during excavations in 1946. The castle ruins, dating back to the 8th century BC, have been transformed into an open-air museum, exhibited in situ without being moved. The park also encompasses Aslantaş Dam Lake on the Ceyhan River. Surrounded by pine and oak forests, this area combines nature and history in one location.

Enter the park early in the morning and first visit the open-air museum; you will have the opportunity to examine the reliefs and castle gates in a calm environment. Afterwards, you can move to the recreation area by the lake and have lunch as a picnic. If you have time, try one of the short walking trails in the forest; walking with the lake view is quite enjoyable.
