Karatepe Aslantaş Open-Air Museum is a Late Hittite border fortress (dating to 700 BC) located on the shore of Aslantaş Dam Lake in the Kadirli district of Osmaniye. In-situ preserved reliefs feature lions, sphinxes, and bilingual texts in the Phoenician alphabet and Hittite hieroglyphs.
Karatepe-Aslantaş is Turkey's first open-air museum. In 1946, H. Th. Bossert, Halet Çambel, and Naci Kum, guided by a local teacher, reached this hill on horseback, discovering a Late Hittite border fortress: Azatiwataya. Dating back to 700 BC, the fortress was built at a point overlooking the Phoenician caravan route, which transported goods from the south to inner Anatolia, and the Ceyhan River.
The most striking aspect of the fortress is the decision made by Halet Çambel and Italian restorers in the 1950s: instead of moving the reliefs to a museum, they left them in their original locations and built shelters over them. Today, the stone carvings at the north and south gates feature lions, sphinxes, hunting scenes, and bilingual texts written side-by-side in the Phoenician alphabet and Hittite hieroglyphs. These texts played a key role in deciphering Hittite hieroglyphs.
The Aslantaş Dam, built on the Ceyhan River in the 1970s, has transformed the hill where the fortress is located into a peninsula. Most visitors spend time by the lake after exploring the archaeological site. Comments frequently highlight the lake view and the picnic and barbecue facilities in the surrounding recreation area. For history enthusiasts, the museum is small but rich; its integration with nature makes this place unique.

Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
Due to the hot climate of Çukurova, summer afternoons can be tiring, especially with little shade on stone surfaces. Spring and autumn are more comfortable for both walking and sitting by the lake. The museum is also open in winter, but humidity and cold winds might shorten the visit to the archaeological site.
How to Get There
From Osmaniye city center, head towards Kadirli, turn left at Cevdetiye neighborhood, and cross the Ceyhan River. For those coming from Kadirli, it is recommended to turn at the next left, not the first left indicated by navigation; for those coming from Osmaniye, it is recommended to turn at the previous right. This is because the location marked on maps often corresponds to the museum's exit. Since public transport is limited, going by private car is the easiest option.
How Much Time to Allocate
Exploring the archaeological site takes 1-1.5 hours; there is a short walking route following the reliefs from the north gate to the south gate. If you add a picnic or barbecue in the lakeside recreation area, it makes sense to allocate half a day, especially for families with children.
Photo Spots
The lion and sphinx reliefs at the north and south gates are the most photographed details. Points overlooking the Aslantaş Dam Lake from the hill are preferred for landscape photography, especially in the afternoon light.
Things to Pay Attention To
It is noted that most location applications often direct to the wrong spot, and the entrance and exit gates are on different sides. Due to the proximity of the recreation area, vehicle traffic can be heavy on weekends. The terrain is uneven for wheelchairs or strollers, and the archaeological site is not fully accessible.
Suggested Itinerary with Surroundings
Karatepe-Aslantaş is usually combined with other stops around Kadirli during an Osmaniye trip. Having lunch or a picnic in the lakeside recreation area and visiting the archaeological site during cooler hours makes the flow more comfortable. If you plan to visit a specific plateau or historical site in the region, you should divide the day accordingly.
