Gölköy Castle is a 150-meter high, single-entrance structure with a cylindrical bastion, built on steep rocks in the Gölköy district of Ordu, dating back to the Persian or Byzantine period; it was included in the UNESCO World List of Ancient Monuments in 1997.
Gölköy Castle rises in Kale Mahallesi (Castle Neighborhood), which also gives it its name, 4 kilometers from the district center. It is built on a rocky mass, reaching a height of 150 meters. Some texts state that the castle was built by Persian King Darius in the 5th century BC, while others estimate that the structure dates back to the Byzantine period. It also has traces in Ottoman records: it is mentioned as the timar (fief) of Kale Dizdarı Çoban Bey in 1415, and Dizdar Kemal in 1485.
The structure was designed for defense purposes. It has a single gate, dominates a large area, and has a layout suitable for observation. To the left of the entrance stands a cylindrical bastion and a watchtower. The castle was included in the UNESCO World List of Ancient Monuments in 1997.
