Gençağa Castle

Since the castle is on an open and high rocky outcrop, wind and precipitation directly affect the weather conditions. Spring and autumn months offer cool weather for hiking and clear days for good visibility. In summer, temperatures are bearable, but it's wise to avoid the midday sun on the rocky ground. In winter, road conditions can be difficult, so it's useful to check the weather before going.

The distance from Ordu city center to İkizce district is 92 kilometers. From İkizce center, you need to travel another 30 kilometers to the castle, which is in the direction of Ünye. The entire route is asphalt, so it can be easily reached by a standard passenger car. Since public transport options are limited, going by your own car or a rented car from İkizce is the most practical way.

The castle itself is not a large structure; exploring the rocky terrain and enjoying the view usually takes between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours. However, considering the distance traveled to İkizce, it is more efficient to dedicate the entire day to this visit or combine it with other natural attractions in the region.

For those coming via Ünye, Gençağa Castle can be combined with Ünye Cave or other stops along the coastline on the same day. If you are coming from İkizce, taking a short break in the district center before heading up to the castle is a sensible choice for resting before the journey.

The castle is built on a steep rock mass, so the ground can be uneven and slippery. Wearing non-slip shoes is important, especially on rainy days. If visiting with small children, caution is needed at the edges; railings or safety barriers may not be present everywhere. Since the area is a 1st-degree natural and archaeological site, collecting stones or fragments is prohibited.

From the highest point of the castle, a wide-angle view of the surrounding valley and hills can be obtained. Shots taken in the morning when the light is horizontal tend to be clearer. The rocky structure itself, with its distinct wall texture after restoration, also makes for a good photographic subject.

Gençağa Castle was built by the Hacıemiroğulları Principality in the 13th century. Like other structures from the principality period in the region, it was built for defensive purposes and drew strength from the steep terrain. The castle's relatively undamaged survival to the present day is attributed to both natural preservation and interventions made in later periods. The restoration work in 2022 was carried out with funding from the cultural contribution share of the Ordu Governorship.
