Saray Mosque, located in Ünye's Hamidiye Neighborhood, is one of the oldest religious structures in the district, built in 1719-1720 by Kondura Hacı Ahmed, featuring cut stone masonry, a mihrab adorned with carved floral motifs, and restored in 2006-2007.
Saray Mosque is a small structure located on a narrow street in Ünye's Hamidiye Neighborhood. According to its inscription, it was built by a captain named Kondura (Gondoroğlu) Hacı Ahmed in the Hijri year 1132, which corresponds to 1719-1720 AD. It acquired its name later: when Süleyman Pasha Palace was built nearby in 1808, palace residents began to worship here, and the mosque gradually became known as Saray Mosque.
The building's past has not always been peaceful. In the early 1940s, it was used as a prison for a period, during which its wooden minaret was demolished. The current stone minaret was completed in the 1960s, and a fountain was built in 1965 in place of the old well in the courtyard. The Ministry of Culture restored the building to its original form in 2006-2007. Comprising a sanctuary built of cut stone and a women's section, the mosque features an interior mihrab with a pointed arch, adorned with carved floral motifs, and a minbar with botanical patterns. The inscription above the double-winged wooden door at the northern entrance is still legible.
Visitors describe the mosque's small and simple state as a warm touch from the past. This is not a crowded tourist stop; it's a hidden gem in the neighborhood, where one stays for a short time and wanders quietly.
Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
Since the mosque is small, the visit is short, so the season doesn't make much difference. Visiting outside of prayer times allows for a more comfortable exploration. Daylight entering through the windows allows you to see the carved motifs on the mihrab and the inscription more clearly.
How to Get There?
It is located on Hacı Emin 1. Street in Hamidiye Neighborhood, close to Ünye city center. It is within walking distance from the center. For those coming from the coastal area, a short taxi or dolmuş ride is sufficient. Since the ruins of Süleyman Pasha Palace and Ünye Living Cultural Heritage Museum are in the same neighborhood, it makes sense to visit both on the same route.
How Much Time Should You Allocate?
The mosque alone is a 15-20 minute stop. When combined with the nearby Süleyman Pasha Palace ruins and other historical mansions in the neighborhood, it turns into a half-day historical walk within Ünye.
Other Stops in the Vicinity
Visiting Saray Mosque along with other historical structures in Ünye makes for a more fulfilling experience. Süleyman Pasha Palace and Walls, Saray Bath, Yalı Church, Mansion with Double Stairs, Sebile Hanım Mansion are all in the same area. You can reach these stops sequentially by walking along the Ünye Culture Road.
Things to Pay Attention to During Your Visit
The mosque is still an active place of worship. It is important to be quiet upon entering and not disturb those who are praying. As mentioned in visitor comments, communicating with the official facilitates visiting parts such as the women's section and the courtyard.
Good Spots for Photography
The stone inscription above the door and the carved details around it make for a good shot. Inside, the floral motifs around the pointed arch of the mihrab and the wooden women's section are also striking. From the outside, the single-balcony minaret and the tiled hip roof, along with the narrow street in the neighborhood, create a simple composition.
