Amos Ancient City

The most suitable period for Amos is May-June before the weather becomes scorching, and September-October when it starts to cool down. In July and August, temperatures around Marmaris rise significantly; visitors report struggling on the path and stairs during midday in this period. Those who go in the summer say that an evening ascent is much better for both avoiding the heat and watching the sunset from the theater steps. Early mornings are also a good option for a cool visit away from crowds.

There are several ways to reach Amos Ancient City. By Car: From Marmaris city center, head towards İçmeler, then towards Turunç. The road is approximately 24-25 km long and passes through a winding and mountainous route; careful driving is essential. You can park your car near Turunç, then reach the ancient city via a 3-4 minute path and approximately 150 steep steps. By Boat: Daily boat tours departing from Marmaris dock at Amos Bay; it is also possible to walk up to the ancient city from the bay. Due to the mountainous nature of the road, it is necessary to drive slowly and cautiously.

Amos's strongest asset is undoubtedly its view. The panoramic view from the upper steps of the ancient theater, stretching to Turunç Bay, Kumlubük, and the open Aegean, particularly pleases photography enthusiasts at sunset. Foreign visitors also state that they specifically come here for sunset photography; it is even mentioned that the city is illuminated in the evening. The theater ruins and the surrounding pine forests also provide a good backdrop for framed photos.

Amos Ancient City cannot be compared to large ancient cities like Ephesus or Aphrodisias in terms of the number of preserved ruins. 1-2 hours is sufficient to explore the ruins and enjoy the view. If you combine this with a swim in Amos Bay, you can spend most of the day in this area. Visitors usually plan it as a day trip from Turunç or Marmaris.

Depart from Marmaris and reach Amos via İçmeler and Turunç. After parking your car, ascend to the ancient city, see the theater and traces of the city walls; then enjoy the view. On your way back, swim in Amos Bay or Turunç. You can complete the day with dinner at a fish restaurant in Turunç. Alternatively, you can join boat tours departing from Marmaris and walk up to the ancient city from the bay.

Appropriate footwear is essential: The path and approximately 150 steep steps are quite challenging with flip-flops or sandals. Prefer closed sports shoes. Water and sun protection: In summer, there is almost no shade on the hill; bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Maintenance status: Visitors frequently mention that the ancient city is not well-maintained enough; do not go with expectations of a major restoration. Vehicle: The Marmaris-Turunç road is winding and narrow; be careful with large vehicles. It is also reported that the Marmaris salamander can be seen in this area; it might be a small surprise for nature observers.

Amos was one of the important settlement points of the Carian civilization in ancient times. Built on a steep hill overlooking the sea within the borders of Turunç Neighborhood, the city is strategically and visually striking due to its location. Inscriptions found in the region in 2021 made significant contributions to clarifying the city's identity and garnered renewed interest in archaeological circles. Excavation and research work are still ongoing. The ancient theater remains the most prominent structure of the city; however, most of the ruins have been damaged over time.
