Gülek Castle

The most favorable periods to visit Gülek Castle are April-June and September-October. During these months, visibility is high, and roads are relatively in better condition. In winter, fog frequently settles in the region; visitors recommend checking the weather beforehand to avoid a wasted trip. In summer, although the temperature below can be stifling, strong winds blow at the castle top; bring a cardigan or a light jacket with you. If you plan a night visit, a powerful flashlight is essential as lighting is insufficient.

The most practical way to reach the castle is by private car. If you are coming from Mersin or Adana, take the Tarsus-Pozantı highway and exit at Çamalan Junction; from there, follow the Gülek Castle signs. Those coming from Niğde or Konya should also descend a bit and prefer the Çamalan route; visitors particularly emphasize this. The road via Tekir Junction and Akçatekir can be quite challenging for both the vehicle and the driver. The route passing through Gülek village can also be used; the castle is reached approximately 5 km after the village entrance. The last 3 km is a stabilized dirt road; it can be muddy after rain, so be careful with low-clearance vehicles.

The most popular photo spot at Gülek Castle is the cliff edge known as the "Trick Rock". Here, photos are taken that give the impression of being suspended in the air due to a perspective trick. The best angle to see the silhouette of Gülek Pass and the Taurus Mountains is the upper part of the castle's inner keep. If the fog has cleared, the morning light yields very good results. Do not lose your photographic focus while moving on the rocks; the ground can be slippery, and there are sections without railings.

The castle area contains neglected sections; you need to be extremely careful when walking on the rocks. Security measures are very limited, so the area is not suitable for families with children. Visitors particularly remind not to leave trash; take your waste back with you to protect the natural area. Local villagers sometimes sell tea and turnip juice at the entrance; however, they are not always there, so it is safer to bring your own food and drink. The weather is variable; consider postponing your trip if there is a fog warning.

While the foundations of Gülek Castle date back to the Middle Ages, the strategic importance of the region goes back much further. The Gülek Pass has historically been one of the main crossing points connecting Anatolia to the Mediterranean coast. The castle controlling this pass was successively ruled by the Romans, Byzantines, Karamanids, Seljuks, and Ottomans; each period left different traces on the structure. The surviving structure consists of three sections: an inner courtyard, an outer castle, and an inner castle. The castle is approximately 95 km from Mersin city center and 65 km from Tarsus city center.

There is no regularly operating food and beverage establishment immediately around the castle. Local villagers sometimes sell sıkma tea and turnip juice at the entrance; however, they may not be there on every visit. When you descend to Gülek town, you can find small businesses offering village breakfast. If you plan to spend lunchtime at the castle top, it would be better to get food and water from Tarsus or Mersin.

It is quite possible to include Gülek Castle in a day trip starting from Mersin or Adana. Reach the castle via the Çamalan route, spend about 1.5-2 hours. On the way back, use the same road and take a short break in Gülek town. Visitors also recommend adding the nearby Kadıncık Dam to the itinerary; beautiful nature photos can also be taken around the dam. If you also include the ancient city of Tarsus in your program, you will have seen both the historical and natural texture of the region in a single day.
